My first contribution to #YearOfTheMoth
White Witch (Thysania agrippina)

Merian documented this moth 300 years ago, but actually got some features wrong! Despite it being the WIDEST INSECT ON EARTH, we don't know its host plant or eggs, and only verified its larva last year! I updated her drawing!

If you are ever programming something deals with time in the slightest bit, always run a Kathmandu test, and make sure that +5.75 UTC offset doesn't blow up whole parts of your code!

I'm not sure, but did you see the ski jumpers are doing like the opposite? Where they are inflating their junk to somehow provide more lift in their suits?

If you want to play along, all you have to do is make cool art themed about the #moth of the week! It starts off next week with the WHITE WITCH!

Create #poems, #games, #sculptures, #paintings, #proceduralart or whatever you want! Give it #YearOfTheMoth and we can help celebrate whatever you make!

e.g. "Oh hey, a lot of folks are starting to use community science instead of citizen science for these reasons..."

vs.

"If you think about it for even a minute!?"

01.02.2026 14:00 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I'm guessing it's likely the latter. I'm mostly just trying to convey that if your true goal is to start getting places to switch up their language, bringing them in more welcomely, rather than abruptly scolding them, could be a more effective strategy.

01.02.2026 14:00 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Like are these folks super intentionally meaning "ONLY CITIZENS" or are they using an outdated term that was first brought to these places by westerners, and then repoliced by those westerners?

01.02.2026 14:00 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

oh i understand the difference in terms, it's more like, speaking as a white guy from the US, it's not always the best look to go around abruptly policing folks from the rest of the world.

I'm with your sentiment against the term Citizen science here, but this feels a bit aggressive, and perhaps not the best way to bring folks into the fold :)

when Spock does the neck pinch, even on bad guys, he always catches them and sets them down very politely. letting this guy fully just drop, leaving Jim to try to awkwardly scramble to catch him, is Vulcan for "it is always morally right to punch Nazis"

Saw a bunch of vids talk about how commendable a job Tim Walz had done navigating the whole situation, his decorum, etc. Fuck all of that. Because Tim Walz is a politician looking to uphold the status quo when it is so obviously awful, fuck him. Fuck all of them. They will not save you!
