In a few years, we expect to have a table made from the original old oak. Someday, 70 years from now, we hope the youngest among us will share today with youngsters on February 14, 2095.

All gathered agreed planting an oak for future generations felt good in these uncertain times, animated with discouraging news. We took pics & videos & promised to gather in better weather to share food & more conversation.

In a conversation with Hattie Mercier, a descendant of the Kalapuya families of the Willamette Valley, they shared an appreciation for marking today with current & past art of Steph Littlebird as part of demonstrating the ongoing relationship between Indigenous people & their ancestral land.

A couple of City of Salem urban foresters & neighbors finished the in-person gathering, & a student was face-timed to add a Tribal perspective. Feb 14, 1859 is Oregon’s birthday or the day the USA officially took this place from the Kalapuya people.

At the planting were 3 generations of Deumlings, the descendants of Joseph Smith, the builder of the original house. There were also 3 generations of the Toskovic family, the property's current owners. Our youngest person was less than 9 & the oldest more than 70.

Happy Valentine’s Day & Happy Bday, Oregon, with a rich dose of complex love for how ancient oaks bring us together. Today, an oak was planted in Salem @ the intersection of Oak & High @ the historic Smith-Frye House built in 1859.
