Ellie Gomersall was a Greens candidate until this morning, when she quit and defected to Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana's Your Party. Here, she explains why independence inspired her big move

Today, I'm announcing that I have joined the currently named Your Party, and I'm resigning my membership, and therefore Scottish Parliamentary candidacy, of the Scottish Green Party. My reasons for leaving the Greens are many in number, but fundamentally I have joined Your Party because I recognise that the future of our country is at stake, and this new project is the only vehicle which can keep Nigel Farage out of 10 Downing Street and build a socialist, independent Scotland.

None of the existing Holyrood parties can be taken seriously when it comes to the fight against austerity; every single one of them is complicit in passing on brutal cuts to public services and making the lives of the working classes worse. Your Party can be a huge mass movement which can take on the far right in our communities, our neighbourhoods, our workplaces. I'm excited to get stuck in, and although this move means I won't be standing for Holyrood next May, I'm excited to get campaigning to elect Your Party MSPs, MPs and councillors who will stand up for the working class.

I'm so grateful to everyone who supported me during my time in the Greens, and my message to each and every one of you is simple: join me. I'm thrilled to be joining Your Party at the same time as three fantastic councillors in Dan, Leòdhas and Seonad, as well as countless activists who like me, recognise the huge potential this new party holds. I firmly oppose the government’s plans for compulsory digital ID cards.

This is an affront to our civil liberties, and will make the lives of minorities even more difficult and dangerous.

It is excessive state interference — and must be resisted.

The anti-immigration bigotry is racist, xenophobic bullshit in and of itself, but none of us should be surprised that the Labour government are using it to increase their authoritarian grip on everyone.
