    •    The U.S. heavily relies on Canadian imports for high-purity aluminum products.

Aluminum:
    •    The situation is more challenging for aluminum:
    •    The U.S. has limited domestic smelting capacity, due in part to high energy costs.
    •    U.S. primary aluminum production has declined sharply over the past few decades.

Canada is the largest exporter of steel to the U.S., followed by countries like Mexico, South Korea, and Brazil.
    •    The U.S. could theoretically ramp up production, but that would likely involve higher costs, longer timelines, and infrastructure upgrades.

So, imports, including from Canada, remain important.
Steel:
    •    U.S. steel production (2023): ~80 million metric tons
    •    U.S. steel consumption (2023): ~100 million metric tons
    •    The U.S. is a net importer of steel.

The United States does produce a significant amount of steel and aluminum, but it does not currently produce enough of either to fully meet its domestic demand—especially when factoring in cost, variety of product types, and manufacturing efficiency.
