for example, english words for urine. we consider "piss" to be crass - but "piss" was already originally a "softer" euphemism. since we didn't address our underlying discomfort with talking about urine, previous words phased out, "piss" moved up to crass, and we made up a new euphemism in "pee"

there is a well documented phenomenon in linguistics in which overreliance on euphemisms simply attributes to the euphemism the full brunt of the original word, to the point of eventually replacing it in the lexicon entirely. we physically cannot bad-word our way out of talking about hard topics
