I would not hesitate to pull the trigger on Shaw. I like his glove, ofc, but he is in a deep funk and has looked real bad at the plate. Or he can learn to bunt.

I like PCA as a “second leadoff” and like his game in front of Hoerner.

I tend to think openers are mostly silly so hopefully that trend continues.

Brewers starting Ashby as opener. That’s good news, #Cubs have hit him.

I would not sub Turner for Busch. Need MB bat AND glove and you may need JT to pinch hit late. But what I would do:

Shota starting - kind of boxed in here with the Boyd decision. Stacked with Rea in case of trouble. He had good starts in MKE this year. Injured in Mil in May.

Colin Rea would have been on short rest, also, so hindsight is always 20/20. Credit the Brewers for being locked in. Almost like they knew which pitches were coming. I’m not saying.

Another reason to continue to add more starters’ arms all year, at deadline, whenever, is to take these pitching gymnastic decisions out of the mix. Short rest, short starts, bullpen max, all of it, it’s exhausting.

Boyd was bad, but the inning completely unraveled after the Nico error. Long road to climb. Hopefully Soroka and Ben Brown (maybe Civale) have a bunch of innings in them.

Awful.

And no Assad on the playoff roster, which is insane to me. I would have had him start this one.

Easy to second-guess the decision to start Boyd on three days‘ rest. Tough positioning by Shaw on Chorio’s leadoff double, and then of course the Hoerner error.

Not ideal. Did not have a Nico Hoerner error on my bingo card.

Strangely like that last series opener at MKE.

Yikes, get someone up. Soroka or Rea would be my preference. 2-1 Brewers.

We’ve seen some of these first inning struggles for Matthew Boyd fairly recently. Not good.
