What is social work in the world of First Nations?
Crisis upon crisis, often manufactured and designed so.
Having the tools, the drive, and the true understanding..
Is not enough. Why?
Because solutions come from a colonial realm, with ideologies that militate against us.
Critical reflection!

This school year in Canada
many First Nation students were met with
horrid news: Funding denied... Rejected...
This is an attack not only on post-secondary students,
but also our future generations of
Language speakers, Knowledge Carriers,
Our very children & youth are still targeted...

My recent observations in the profession that even a First Nation Social Worker encounters!
"Work smarter, not harder" carries a lot of meaning in a world that honours unhealthy work/life balances. We are the ones who have to make those hard decisions to maintain our careers!

Very interesting perspective about the different ways we all can internalize ways-of-life via dependency on a foreign structure. One that is colonial and all engulfing on nations that have their own geniuses, rhetoric, methodology, diplomacy etc prior to this created dependency as described below:

Love this post I found on Facebook:
It is very relevant to what is happening in First Nations in Canada (and other countries/continents).

This is not acceptable.
The legal principle, enforced by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT), is not something that should even be on the table for "funding cuts."

Opinion:
As First Nation Social Workers, these various settlement agreements should become something we, as First Nation Social Workers, become engaged in. These social issues that Canada is "settling on" needs our trauma-informed and client-centred approach.
What is also needed advocacy!

To continue: Our frontline occupation isn't meant to be easy because it is all about pulling our clients out of the water, before they drown. However, having experience in the background has also given me the opportunity to know what it is like changing systems for prevention. Both are essential!

Dear First Nation Social Workers,
I hope these times of perceived chaos doesn't take away from your self-care.
Now that I have personal frontline experience in my social work practice, I know the importance of taking time for myself. Our work in this capacity has the tendency to be made in crisis

Knowing history, and how most things that were once considered good and pure become distorted, what does this day signify truy?
