So migrants must study English to A level standard to be allowed to work; but degrees in English are 'worthless' and a rip off.

That's a very precise level of English proficiency being mandated.

But I think there is a responsibility here for those of us in rich nations to look at the circumstances which have led people from the global south to make that move, and to ensure our work on climate embeds social justice. A humane response needs to focus on causes as well as consequences.

Starmer says past governments have been "squeamish" talking about immigration. Bullshit.

Starmer isn't bravely breaking a taboo. He's blaming vulnerable people & deflecting attention from the super rich who hoard power & wealth.

Fuck this. Good friends of mine and their child who I see as a neice would be affected by this. Their salaries for useful jobs come nowhere near this visa threshold. It's a terrible idea. Bad for people and bad for our country.

Of all the nonsensical claims in the climate denial motion Reform will submit to Kent County Council today, perhaps the most absurd is the claim that there's no evidence for mass bleaching of coral reefs

That's like saying there's no evidence for the existence of the Reform Party

Though I note the decision to use the word 'resignation' when all media outlets say 'sacked' is disingenuous at best.

REAL HOPE. REAL CHANGE.

β€œStarmer’s instinct was to stand by Peter Mandelson, despite the evidence. His resignation now isn’t a matter of principle; it’s simple political expediency. It’s a symbol of a broken politics where the same insiders always fail up.

A line chart titled β€œAnnual COβ‚‚ emissions” shows the global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and industry from 1950 to 2023. The y-axis represents emissions in billions of tonnes (t), ranging from 0 to 40 billion t. The x-axis covers the years from 1950 to 2023.

The chart presents a steady increase in emissions from approximately 5 billion tonnes in 1950 to over 36 billion tonnes in 2023. Key features include:

A consistent upward trend from 1950 through the early 1970s.

A brief plateau and dip around 1980–1983.

A strong growth trend resuming in the late 1980s.

A sharp increase during the 2000s.

A slight drop around 2008–2009, likely due to the global financial crisis.

A major dip in 2020, attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A rapid rebound in emissions after 2020, continuing the upward trend to a new high in 2023.

A blue line labeled β€œWorld” traces these changes over time.

Below the chart, the data source is listed as the Global Carbon Budget (2024), and the graphic is credited to OurWorldInData.org with a Creative Commons license (CC BY). A footnote explains that the data includes emissions from coal, oil, gas, flaring, cement, and steel, but excludes land-use changes such as deforestation.

I get annoyed at the narrative that all the awareness and work on climate change hasn't done anything. Yes, global COβ‚‚ emissions indeed continue to climb, but we don't know the counterfactual. When I was in grad school, we were on track for 5Β°C of warming. Now it's below 3Β°C. That's progress.

Southern Britain will soon have the climate of southern Europe, but the plants and other species that make up our forests aren’t adapted to those conditions

So if we want forests in Britain in future, what are we going to do?

The answer requires upending decades of conservation convention

A track leads ahead of you, along a drystone wall. It passes under a magnificent tree, whose leaves are yet to emerge, and then squeezes through a narrow gate. Beyond the gate, the path leads up into high hills, visible in the distance.

Today I am ashamed to have voted Labour at the last election. I thought I was voting for an end to cruel and punitive treatment of vulnerable people under the tories, but it turns out I was voting for a continuation of it under labour.

Three tarot cards lie side by side. They are the nine of swords (pain and distress, shown here as white sharp implements - a saw, a razor blade, a dagger-on a black background), the hanged one (limbo and being misunderstood, illustrated as a person captured in ropes, suspended upside down under water, accompanied by an eel) and death (change, transformation - including death. A very beautiful representation of a mixed race baby, it's parents, an older woman and a crowned skeleton, under an eclipsed moon).

In the most untouched, pristine parts of the Amazon, birds are dying. Scientists may finally know why Populations have been falling for decades, even in tracts of forest undamaged by humans. Experts have spent two decades trying to understand what is going on

Absolutely devastating news. Birds dying everywhere due to climate breakdown, even in the depths of the Amazon

As I've said before, the impacts are all-pervasive and there is nowhere to hide, for human or animal

Trump’s definitions of "male" and "female" are nonsense science with staggering ramifications "How can you so fully misunderstand basic human biology, and then legislate about it?"

I was interviewed by @msjpauly.bsky.social for @motherjones.com regarding that awful gamete size "sex" executive order. A bit of an explainer here of why the science is so bad, and why that's dangerous:
