We are devastated to see 20% of our beloved colleagues laid off by the same leadership who have yet to recognize our union.

We demand that leadership at Sesame Workshop bargain with us over the terms of these massive layoffs. Consider letting them know that you expect the same.

Communities are being attacked in our city. Hochul, as the rest of the Democratic Party that cares more about procedures and decorum, are complicit in this fascist take over.

A screenshot of a headline from the BBC News website that reads "Sweden searches for answers after country's deadliest shooting". The picture heading the story is an image of a young Kurdish man named Ismail Moradi, who was a witness to the shooting. The caption reads "Ismail Moradi told the BBC he fears there was a racial element to the shooting"

Mediawatch: this is how the BBC chose to illustrate its coverage of a mass shooting in Sweden, by a white Swedish man, that left 11 people dead.

While the impunity of Mayor Adams has dominated our attention, there's another crisis of accountability playing out at his NYPD.

Misconduct complaints are the highest they've been since 2012 but many are dismissed without investigation because of staff and funding shortfalls.

We never made classrooms COVID safe.

Schools were hotbeds of COVID transmission. Kids died. Teachers and other school staff died. Family members living with kids died.

Many who didn’t dieβ€”including kidsβ€”got long COVID.

THAT is what we didn’t reckon with. All we ever hear about is harms of closure

"Affordable housing" in NYC means something totally different than in smaller cities. Why? Standards for "affordable" are tied to area median incomeβ€”so affordable units in expensive cities might match (or exceed!) market rates in other neighborhoods! People who were forced into parentification as children often become emphatic and caring adults. Yes this is troubling to some extend, but so many incredible people share this experience.

The Mystery of Food Deserts They didn’t materialize around the country for no reason. Something happened.

1. The conventional explanation for food desertsβ€”that these places are too poor or too rural to generate enough spending on groceries, or too Black to overcome racist corporate redlining β€” fail to grapple with a key fact: food deserts didn’t used to exist. My new piece in The Atlantic.

The only way America can keep a β€œmiddle class” is by safeguarding the upper class and perpetuating a lower class.
Policies solely focusing on the middle class, thinking it will trickle downward, are not only unfeasible, they’re immoral, especially at a time of broadening social equity.
