Another month, another cycle of Ardern-bashing disguised as political commentary. Damien Grant’s recent column in Stuff (framed as a review of Jacinda Ardern’s memoir A Different Kind of Power) is not just dismissive. It’s part of a well-worn pattern: minimising women leaders' intellect, attributing their success to branding, and implying they were merely reactive, not strategic. What looks like a lukewarm book review is actually part of a broader cultural script. A woman leads during a crisis, governs with empathy, and breaks with traditional leadership styles. In response, we downplay her decision-making, question her intellectual heft, and mock her legacy, not through substantive critique, but through casual derision. This is not a neutral observation. It’s part of the cycle of gendered political violence. Online abuse of women politicians doesn’t emerge in a vacuum. It’s driven by misogyny and reinforced by media commentary that undermines their credibility, leadership, and intellect. When women in power are consistently portrayed as unserious, overly emotional, or lacking depth (all based on patriarchal attitudes), it invites contempt that in turn fuels online violence against women leaders. The commentary claims “all we have left is Kindness.” As if kindness in leadership isn't itself political. As if leading through a terror attack, a volcanic disaster, and a global pandemic without cruelty or ego is somehow unremarkable. Critique Ardern’s decisions, by all means. But when male leaders are allowed complexity, while women are reduced to soft branding and hollow virtue, we should ask: What kind of power do we really value?
