but we remember the immersion as a fact, not as an emotion or experience.

maybe that the only perception that 'endures' is after the fact. what we glimpse at the moment we're immersed is always already forever lost?

such an intriguing section. the idea that we are so preoccupied that we don't expect, much less imagine we could be affected by, something we will encounter.

what is there really? perhaps, what is not accessible to the present version of ourselves.

that she could deal w/ one Berlin woman like that but not so many of them! humor in Outline is like this, a kind of healthy private venting that comes out in public, usually amongst good friends. perhaps, what we see in these conversations is a leap over stages of friendship.

agree. i think he managed things poorly. it's a sympathetic story though to tell the narrator, present himself as the poor fool of sorts.

hahhaha. i'm reminded of some UK study I saw that the 3rd thing that women notice about men is shoes. first, HAIR. second, EYES. third, SHOES.

true, family can do that.

the more I think of it, i find that writing/reading prepares me for immersion. i think people can't help but think of moments as preparatory for next moments. there are people who are better at immersion naturally than others too! i envy them.

I remember the grandmother reading these letters of Mme de Sévigné in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time.

"The interesting ones [people] are like islands, you don't bump into them on the street or at a party, you have to know where they are and go to them by arrangement."

Funny how we look for people in different ways as we get older. It's like we believe far less in fate.

an impromptu boat ride and swimming in the sea and talk of souvlaki -- we are starting to get glimpses of greece, which reminds me that I have never been and really should go.

that harmony is timeless/weightless whereas antagonism takes up time and space.

also, I have quietly fallen in love with the narrator, which has to be the highest standard for a writer.
