kantha is a south asian technique for recycling scrap fabric. it was originally used at a time when fabric was very precious. the technique involves attaching layers of scrap material using a running stitch (pics 1, 2 and 3). it's similar to japanese boro (pic 4).

Under Siege

Here on the slopes of hills.
Facing the dusk
And the canon of time
Close to the garden of broken shadows
We do what prisoners do.
And what the jobless do:
We cultivate hope.

Surrealism, cafes and lots (and lots) of cats: why Japanese fiction is booming From tales of alienation to comforting novels set in bookshops, Japanese authors have written nearly half of this year’s bestselling translated novels in the UK. What’s their secret?

“It’s not like cat books are huge in Japan. It’s not as big a thing as is being made out in the UK.”

Japanese fiction is booming here. But is a golden age turning into a glut? I spoke to readers, translators, editors and agents about why it's so popular, and how Murata is the new Murakami:

You collapse in the street and as you come round, the first thing you see is a circle of grinning Louis Wain cats looking down at you and chanting this. #folkhorror

Would read a novel about a writer who gets included in a Starter Pack with a load of other writers he considers inferior.

All the Images Will Disappear, by Tobi Haslett On Annie Ernaux’s spectacular impersonality

Ernaux’s works aren’t coy or glancing; they’ve been sharpened to a point. Though she seems like a writer of details, each book is a vital mission, carried out with thrusting force. “No lyrical reminiscences, no triumphant displays of irony”
