My journey from foreign correspondent to Uber driver in Trump's America I once documented human displacement and desperation; now I am living it

"After working as Reuters’ Ottawa bureau chief for five years, my job was eliminated... When I crossed the border, it didn’t feel like a homecoming. America today is as foreign to me as Italy was in 1998, when I started working there as a foreign correspondent. It is a darker place now."

Groupe Montoni reports vandalism at Montreal's old Molson Brewery site | CBC News Graffiti tags were discovered on one of the exterior wall of the old Molson Brewery on Saturday by Groupe Montoni, one of the owners of the building.

"The individuals responsible and the meaning behind the graffiti have not yet been identified."

Um, they literally wrote their names down the side of the building ... and the point was to make their names as visible as possible. It's graffiti, not rocket science.

One of the unacknowledged advantages of this awful era is that it's revealing for all to see the putrid connections between great wealth and great power.

The intentions of the oligarchs are fully exposed and more blatant than ever.

But remember: We outnumber the oligarchs.

Pluralistic: Social media needs (dumpster) fire exits (14 Dec 2024) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

Doctorow said a fix requires solidarity at internet scale. Europe already has GDPR portability. Social portability would let you take your posts and followers with you the way you keep a phone number when switching cell providers. Hard to enshittify a system users can leave.

Reagan gutted competition law in the US. Fewer rivals or regulators made the “umpire weaker than the players." The last US privacy law was in 1988 to stop video rental records leaking. Canada froze privacy law in the early 2000s and gutted enforcement during the Harper years.
