Her attorney is actually well-known in conspiracy/anti-vax evangelical circles. He was actively promoting the view that worldwide vaccination was a covert attempt to create worldwide depopulation. He'd get a hearing from the likes of RFK for sure, if not so much from legit courts.

Yep-- put a wealthy, white convicted felon who literally trafficked children into minimum security luxury prisons, and put immigrants with brown skin and no criminal record into Alligator Alcatraz. That tracks with the ethics of this administration.

Yes. This is both a legal requirement in most states (there must and an ecclesial requirement of the liturgies of a number of churches (largely because it is a legal requirement in most states).

This is the remnant of the Banns, making sure there weren't other marriages or banned consanguinity.

Perhaps they were not properly poured (I got the "official training" at Guinness in Dublin on St Patrick's Day 2017!), or they went flat during filming. Beer specs and religious doctrine and practices are two things the entertainment industry rarely get right.

No, we have laws to keep poor people in subservience to the rich and to exonerate the rich at all times. And we have police to protect the property investments of the rich, but not those of the poor. Classic plutocracy.

So the epistle reading for this Sunday is on point.
"Work for the well-being of all."
That part about "especially toward those in the household of God" doesn't mean privilege other Christians. It means, "Household of God, I'm talking to YOU, ESPECIALLY" (with those capital letters Paul mentioned).

Also indigenous genocide, justified in this rhetoric: "He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions."

Yes there is. Blame it on Paul putting a lot of various themes into the letter and then having to find a way to bring them all to a conclusion. Or, just enjoy it and focus on one. I'm doing the latter.

I get this. I'm also aware there are plenty of congregational cultures-- especially on personnel teams-- where if the pastor isn't actually busy all the time that raises questions about whether the pastor is doing enough. So I'd ask you to think about congregational leadership culture as well.

Why do you need satellites when the president has a Sharpie and can write down where the hurricane is at all times?

The majority of the current SCOTUS has broken federalism in favor of plutocracy. If there is not a realistic way to support the enforcement federal law throughout the country, that law has no realistic value. Individual and class action lawsuits are not affordable for most citizens of this country.

The distinction is between something we choose and do in obedience to what God commanded us (ordinance) and what God has promised to do through these means of grace (sacrament). In the first, we are the actors that ultimately matter. In the second, God is the actor who matters more.

I'm not offended by your usage. I just think you don't need to affirm ex opere operato to make the distinction between evangelical and "mainstream" Protestant sacramental theologies, assuming you're still talking in the terms of authenticity in previous posts.

26.06.2025 02:17 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Ex opere operato is term in Roman Catholic theology, that the rite itself accomplishes the result. The rite itself does not do that in Anglican (or Lutheran, or most Protestant) theology. The Spirit does through the church using the rite as a means of grace given to the church.

So, understanding that in baptism God does something concrete that is irreversible and unrepeatable-- initiates us into life in Jesus Christ-- does not in itself make baptism "ex opere operato." This is simply Christian pneumatology. The gifts and calling of the Holy Spirit are irrevocable.

I grew up SB, MDiv at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (before the far right). Your distinction is right viz baptism, but might should be modified for prayer/liturgy:

The second would be:
things someone else wrote = not authentic

The Lord's Prayer was thus "not authentic." We didn't use it.

It marks when some folks in Texas finally got the word (after about 2 years) that they were no longer held as slaves. This is a day of victory for the anti-slavery cause. It is also a day for mourning and reflection on how it could have taken so long to get the word out to everyone affected.

Those party names do not map to the contemporary party names or positions. Assuming you knew this, your comment is disingenuous. If you did not know this, now you do.

Doesn't need to be rejected at all. But he does need to be instructed-- and be willing to be instructed-- so he does not use his paper to seek to split the church. Heresy isn't heresy because it diverges; it becomes heresy when it becomes a basis for schism.

"Preach the ding dang gospel" does not mean the focus of your preaching has to be the gospel reading. It means proclaim the good news. Trinity Sunday worship isn't for explaining. It's for celebrating.

We could use a Calvin Hampton version of the Athanasian Explanation. Or any musical setting that's singable by a congregation, for that matter. Lutheran practice is to use that Athanasian Explanation on Trinity Sunday. (Note I don't say creed, because it nowhere says I/we believe into).

Lex orandi, lex credendi-- yes. The greater question is which form of praying draws one closer to the aim of its words, not just its particular rhetoric? In this example (not all) the older language comes off to me, at least, as pedantic, didactic, and condescending by priest toward the laity.

And it appears this is what the cardinals have acted to bring to the Catholic Church and to the world. This Lutheran pastor rejoices in this!

Lutheran pastor here: We've been in dialog toward some kind of mutual recognition. Under Pope Francis we'd made great strides together. And, right now, the world needs a pope who, as Francis did, will stand up against fascism and immoral economic systems and alongside poor and marginalized people.
