More than 200,000 deaths a year can be attributed to freshwater snails. The snails are hosts to deadly parasites, in particular parasitic flatworms known as flukes.

For reference, lions kill about 250 humans per year...which still feels like a lot?

How Archaeologists Try To Smell, Hear, And Taste The Past In β€œDinner With King Tut,” Sam Kean shows how experimental archaeology can recreate the stinky, slimy, and tasty parts of ancient history.

The stinky. The slimy. The... tasty? 🦠🍴 Science writer and author Sam Kean shares experimental archeologists' quest to recreate the elements of lost civilizationsβ€”and launch some catapults, too.

we're just starting to get a few here... but the choice is thin on the ground and nowhere near the fruit choice you guys have after all of your cider history

I listen to the Cider Voice podcast with absolute thirst and envy at the number of varieties available over there, in France, Spain :)

we just have nothing like the cider available to you in Britain, I'm envious... while we used to be a major apple producer right up through to the middle-to-late 20th Century unfortunately all of our cider apples (bar 1 guy I know of who blends juice) have been pulled for commercial store varieties.

Our boy cat found a bird in the pet park and dispatched it, brought it inside, and basked in the glory of it's violent demise. Don't tell me YOUR CAT goes out into the wild every day/night and doesn't harm a fly. These creatures are killing machines. Loveable cunts. But deadly.

Last Summer we saw out of our kitchen window a FAMILY of rats enjoying our compost, the parent ran to explain to their offspring not to take trap baits. It's a constant battle.

That's the rat we have most around here. One once came to live inside in my unused photography cupboard, lived in three drawers, and my partners stocking drawer in the bedroom. Stole the cats food and hoarded it... eventually died ambling around like it lived here. Too smart for traps, the bastards.

My mother grew up on King Island (between mainland Australia and Tasmania in Bass Strait) and they used to call her a wog when she was a child because of her last name, Tronerud (the family farm in Norway - originally Jurgenson, from memory). I wouldn't be surprised if Norway Rat wasn't derogatory.

My grandfather was a Norwegian so I pay attention - the US had laws against Chinese & Norwegian workers circa late 1800s - in Tasmania, of our five rats, we have the brown rat (aka the common rat, street rat, sewer rat, wharf rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat and Norwegian rat). Obviously an insult...

Govt to cut #JobSeeker benefit for 18 & 19 year olds who’s parents earn over $65,000, even if the teens have a disability or health condition. With #CostOfLiving & the job shortage they’re cranking up stress levels to 11, all to meet a target.

business as usual fears disruption... I saw this in the professors when I was doing an MBA... they all built their careers on the idea of unlimited resources, exponential infinite growth... global warming made them explode out of proportion with rage despite the evidence... the greens threaten that.
