The Arctic is the world’s early warning system and it is ringing out. It is warming up to 4 times faster than global average. What happens in the Arctic affects us all. An integrated approach to prevention, preparedness and crisis management is key to address our common challenge.

UNDRR SRSG highlights 3 take aways from the Asian tsunami: 1) build back better, stronger livelihoods, cohesive societies, better governance; 2) no monopoly in innovation eg early warning system (EWS) was in place in the Indian Ocean; 3) EWS is a continuous investment, essential but not enough.

What did we learn from the 2004 Asían Tsunami? @hadjalahbib.bsky.social recalled in her intervention at the EP how the images of devastation are impressed in her mind. We did learn that investing in disaster preparedness is a must, early warnings needed #DRR

There are no natural disasters.

Natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis may be impossible to stop, but the loss of life and economic damage they inflict are usually the result of human decisions.
