It's been an incredibly frustrating day with Vancouver passing an austerity budget that will cut funding for important public services and infrastructure and fire hundreds of staff, even after over 600 speakers, including myself, speaking out against the harm that this budget will do to our city.

this seems like a foolproof and universally beloved plan until ken sim puts in a salary cap freeze to keep ticket prices low and makes the fourth line full of cops "to keep the stars safe"

As you may have heard, Vancouver’s proposed 2026 budget will mean over $120 million in service cuts, and our most vulnerable populations will bear the burden of these cuts, including women - one of the cuts that have been proposed is removing change tables and period product dispensers!

Last week ABC's Brian Montague engaged in some seriously unprofessional conduct at city council. This is just a clip of a larger series of interruptions.

This sorts of bullying shouldn't be tolerated in civic business.

Holy moly the way ABC councilor Brian Montague just interrupts Lucy Maloney to make glib, snarky little comments while she's speaking is EXTREMELY condescending and unprofessional.

I don't recall seeing anything quite like it in council before. Wow.

There are a few possible criticisms of this project out there, but "I am voting NO because nobody is representing the opposing side" is a piss poor one. Try plugging this on some other controversial motions and it's easy to see how nonsensical this argument is.

... and there are plenty of people, especially younger folks, who don't or can't attend public hearings because of their lives and obligations, even though they might be in favour of this development.

I struggle to wrap my head around how this is a legitimate opposition to a development project.

Watching the news about the terror attack in Vancouver will do nothing for you but deepen your despondency about it.

Cops will know nothing till the morning. I would expect an update around 8-9 am.

News rarely amounts quickly from these tragedies — more so when they happen at 9 on a Saturday PM.

Finally, Hardwick & TEAM's dismal showing ought to be a nail in the coffin of electoral NIMBYism in Vancouver.

This was as good as it gets for them: a by-election, low turnout (yes even tonight), loser incumbents, the Broadway Plan to rally against.

If she can't win tonight, she's done.

Thank you, Vancouver! I am so grateful for all of your support.

You have voted for progressive and principled opposition. And that's what I will deliver.

Just a reminder, this by-election really matters. A single councilor can single-handedly shape our city in so many ways.

Please go vote for @lucymaloney.bsky.social on Saturday! She's going to pick up this legacy and push it even further.

January 2025: Update on bike lane and parking Based on what we heard from community members, we have adjusted the design of the planned bike lane between Quesnel Drive and Dunbar Street. The existing vehicle parking lane will remain next to the curb, with a painted bike lane next to the travel lane. Bike lane painting will resume in spring 2025, when weather permits.

Vancouver tried to add a bike lane on King Ed in Dunbar:

Mayor Ken Sim's weak leadership resulted in staff caving to misinformation from local opponents. Now we're getting another painted bike lane next to arterial traffic.
