Infographic showing that 43 out of 97 days had heatwaves in Southeastern Europe from June to September 2024. Heatwaves are defined as three or more consecutive hot days. The chart visually represents hot days as red-orange dots along curved lines for each month (June to September), with a cluster in July marked "13 days on record," indicating an especially long heatwave period. An EU flag is in the top-right corner.
In 2024, Europe was the worldβs fastest-warming continent.
We had the hottest year on record, impacting an estimated 413,000 people. Sea surface temperatures also reached new highs.
As our planet heats up, urgent climate action is more critical than ever.
Last week week marked 20 years of the @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social @faceforhunters.bsky.social agreement.
Here are my personal thoughts about why it's been worth it and why it is still relevant.

π Good News for the #TurtleDove! For the first time, Turtle Dove numbers are going up!
In the #West the population has been rising for three years, enough to reopen hunting at low levels. Now since 2024 weβre also seeing signs of recovery in the #East

The targeted change to the protection status of wolves worked procedurally. Next: Good decisions by Member States will lead to better coexistence.

"Both FACE and @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social have a common goal to see the sky full of birds, and we work hard to achieve this, especially on the need to improve habitats across Europe"

π¦ Good celebration of an important cooperation between EU hunters & NGO BirdLife. It wasn't always easy, but it's overall fruitful: We all want a sky full of birds and we want the Commission to protect habitats! Thanks @jessikaroswall.ec.europa.eu @davidscallan.bsky.social @arielbrunner.bsky.social!

Ah! I'm disappointed that "Hunting, Conservation & Cooperation: 20 Years of @faceforhunters.bsky.social β @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social collaboration" event is not going to be on-line. Excellent speakers! Register now if you're in Brussels on the 2nd of June.

There are hunting methods where hunters wait all night in hides in the hope that ducks land on water to decoys, then they shoot (FR). Shooting pigeons decoyed into trees is another similar concept. Grouse with a rifle in the north of Europe. Predator control for corvids (ground or trees).

The wolf population has almost doubled in 10 years (from 11 193 in 2012 to 20 300 in 2023).
Itβs a targeted proposal to change the protection status of the wolf only, not to open the directive.
Doing nothing, on the other hand, would put the entire directive at risk.
I feel the same although I donβt have a podcast π

27.04.2025 05:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβll be honest: I care a lot about biodiversity. And the gun clubs in Sligo and Galway I am involved in are doing good work for biodiversity. We clearly agree to disagree about pheasant releasing in Ireland.
