Thinking about it, George W. Bush was the first president I actively hated at the time. I hated Reagan in hindsight but I was only 12 when his tenure ended. I'll never forget that interview where W. ridiculed Karla Faye Tucker whom he just had executed.

Without Cheney there would be no Trump. The Bush admin wanted to unify America in a militaristic, nationalist project. They succeeded, at least for a time. These days even American liberals mutter "thank you for your service" before their brains have even engaged. Cheney teed up the fascism present.
