Beyond deficit models in early childhood development science We appreciate the efforts of the Lancet Series, Early Childhood Development and the Next 1000 Days, to draw attention to the needs of young children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs).1...

An important short correspondence by @gabrielscheidecker.bsky.social et al. pointing out that the Lancet’s ‘Next 1000 Days’ series risks repeating “a deficit model, which can cause harm by promoting negative stereotypes about people living in poverty.”

“We urge early childhood development researchers to systematically address well documented biases when assessing needs and to shift towards approaches that fully recognise and build on existing, context-adapted practices, expertise, and aspirations of caregivers and their children around the world.”

Finally out! For the first time, The Lancet has published a critical paper on the science of Early Childhood Development (#ECD).

As an interdisciplinary team of authors, we call on the ECD field move beyond the widespread use of deficit-based models.

In our new paper "Help can harm," Nga T.T. Mai and I examine the unintended consequences of parenting interventions among Vietnamese migrant families in Germany. We argue that such harmful effects deserve much closer attention.

Title page of an article titled "Unfair knowledge practices in global health: a realist synthesis".

It's great to see our #realistsynthesis on "Unfair knowledge practices in global health" is the most read & shared HPP article in 2024 blogs.lshtm.ac.uk/hppdebated/2...

Please read it to see the many ways epistemic injustice manifests in how we do (global) health equity work doi.org/10.1093/heap...

The problem with parenting interventions in the Global South | Aeon Essays Early childhood development interventions in the Global South is a huge industry built on highly questionable assumptions

Fab essay from member @gabrielscheidecker.bsky.social: "early childhood science implicitly promotes Western, urban middle-class skills and behaviours... a child has reached their full potential when they behave and think like a Western, urban middle-class child."

‘Save the parasites’ may not be a popular rallying cry – but it could be a vital one | Aeon Videos One in three parasitic species is in danger. Here’s why humans may need to power through the ‘ick’ to save them

Parasites can be hard to love. However, as researchers in this video argue, with up to one in three species at risk of extinction, we might want to start to seriously consider which parasites may be worth saving. @sciam.bsky.social
