Keep Hope Alive: a Gaza Giving Circle We are a team of volunteers in the US and UK, led by two sisters passionate about helping our friends on the ground keep their families and neighbors alive with food, water, & shelter. We saw that…

Now 18 hours left—as someone with lupus, I know that going without consistent food & water leads to organ failure, and Sarah is facing not only that but a COMPLETE lack of treatment. Help her afford medicine.

My idea is to create a hybrid exhibition/museum to show the research and life on board, combining an online gallery (with photos, clips, infographics, etc) with a physical educational resource kit (with samples, lesson plans, zines) so that we have a better understanding of scientific expeditions.

As a science communicator and advocate for democratising science, I look forward to experimenting with ways we do outreach, public engagement, and community-centred science. Regards scientific expeditions, how can we engage the public and be transparent on how they happen and their purposes?

As a geologist, I’m excited to be back. In my interview, when they asked why I wanted to come to this expedition, my first answer was “because I really love volcanoes”, followed by my second answer of how I’m excited to be talking about geochemical cycling. I'm looking forward to seeing the action!

I’m here to announce that I am on board the scientific vessel Chikyu as a freelance Science Communicator for the IODP3 Expedition 502: Impact of Petit-Spot Magmatism on Subduction seismicity and global geochemical cycle.

Even a small donation could really help get Nabil the creams he needs for his skin (going to put a picture in the replies here)

Please share, 17 hours left ⚠️

Last winter was deadly for children exposed to cold in their tents. Dozens of children died. And almost all of these six families are a) children and b) in tents.

Hell with shelter, winter clothes. and blankets. Nothing less than LIFESAVING. 0/1000

It’s not the “parallels with Nazi Germany” we need to worry about these days but the parallels with the USA. We have our own pound-shop Trump and acolytes and a press that seems to want them to be in charge. They already are in some places. Well done everyone.

Community gardens were a godsend to my mental health, especially when I was being suffocated with anxiety near the end of my contract!

As EDI roles & projects pop up about getting more POC visitors in heritage/rural/green spaces, I wonder how much effort is put into addressing the racist structures/beliefs/actions of both the institution and the surrounding community? Or are we just another source of untapped market to profit from?

Last week, I had the privilege of seeing Nabihah Iqbal DJ at the Jazz Cafe Festival, and I felt like I was instantly transported through time and space to 1980s India, when disco took it by storm. I imagined an alternate universe, or perhaps it was a past life I was seeing through snippets 💖

I notice that when I tell people I studied Geology, especially when I travel, one of the first responses I get are “so do you work in mining or oil/gas/energy” which makes me cringe. But even when I was an undergrad, I thought I’d be limited to these jobs, and that almost put me off pursuing it.

More than 160 Gazan medics held in Israeli prisons amid reports of torture Senior doctors claim they were subjected to months of physical abuse, as UN calls for release of those still detained

Director of al-Shifa hospital Dr. Abu Selmia after 7 months in Israeli jails: “There was little to no food...no water, no toilet...I saw people who were dying there...I was beaten so badly I couldn’t use my legs or walk. No day passes without torture.”

I mean... her writing centers Brown women pursuing white, conventionally attractive men & model minority behaviour. Not surprising that these spaces celebrates and gives "firsts" to marginalised folks who uphold their oppressive structures. I just wish our own community were more critical about it.

Yes, I wish I had nurturing friends who valued me and looked out for me in school and university but I can’t change the past. I do, however, now can recognise what is a healthy friendship and have since made many - I have no hesitation in pursuing new friends that make my life even more enjoyable.

First time since my PhD that I started having mental breakdowns. However, this time is different because I have developed friendships that genuinely care for me. Life can feel like a circle but it’s more like a… spiral? Fibonacci circle? Sadness feels less heavy when there’s others to share the load

I am so grateful for people like @drmadina.bsky.social, @pokubakes.com, @ellietheelement.bsky.social. Life has tough, painful phases and joyful, rewarding phases. My close friends know it’s been incredibly difficult since March. It felt like wave after waves, I’m tired of making the best of it.

It’s intentional - when you see examples of learnt lessons and successes, it empowers you. It’s intentional that our education system focuses on individuals who are/can be made palatable (eg by “working hard” to persuade colonisers) and erases/vilifies people power and resistance (eg direct action)

15.02.2025 22:51 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

I think it’s intentional. Building a narrative that you’re either a rich right wing conservative protecting your power, white working class resorting to fascist politics, or liberal from privilege. If you do your homework, you can see a spectrum of how oppressed people have been organising

15.02.2025 22:48 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Or when middle class folks critique that left/progressive is made of privileged people/young university students/liberal art graduates. Yes, there’s criticism on how middle class left folks do politics but this is erasure of the many grass root, working class approaches politics and community.

It drives me mad when financially stable people scoff at the idea of community work and volunteering. "Not unless I get paid" because they coded themselves to think that every interaction they have with the world, has to be monetised.

Not everything has to turn profit.

I wonder how all those institutions that released decolonisation statements are doing?

Have they looked into how much they invest into arms, fossil fuel, and mining? How much of their money goes into the oppression of Palestine, Congo, Sudan and indigenous communities around the world?

Hmm, Science and Industry Museum in Manchester has a curator on the Legacies of Enslavement… wonder how it will connect to the profits the Science Museum Group benefits from with the slavery happening in the fossil fuel and mining companies it has accepted sponsorship from.

Begging folks in the UK who are acting as armchair commentators on the US rollback of DEI initiatives actually pay attention to how it’s emboldening your politicians here to be louder about their anti-DEI politics.

Honestly, minoritised folks have been warning you about the dangers of seeing science as apolitical and keeping yourself into your little privileged ivory tower instead of engaging with your community. We’re not surprised with what’s happening, but we’re tired as you complain in the back seat.
