Net Zero Is Dead. Long Live Renewable Energy
February 25, 2026 at 4:00 AM UTC
By Javier Blas
Javier Blas is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist covering energy and commodities. He is coauthor of “The World for Sale: Money, Power and the Traders Who Barter the Earth’s Resources.”
The concept of "net zero" is effectively dead, as global energy policy has shifted away from it, with the term being mentioned only once at a recent gathering of the world's richest nations.
The movement to achieve net zero by 2050 was always considered far-fetched, requiring a significant drop in consumption of oil, natural gas, and coal, which is unlikely to happen given current trends.
Despite the death of net zero, renewable energy is still alive, and will continue to grow, with electricity being the fastest growing form of energy and renewables covering a significant chunk of the increase.
The oil pundit brain is fundamentally unsuited to dealing with climate as an issue.
Scenarios depicting a transition to safe energy are treated as if they're forecasts, and correspondingly scoffed at as 'bad forecasts'. The idea of laying out a desirable future we should fight for is just weird

A bit late to this, but this graphic by @amywestervelt.bsky.social is **extremely** important. It's another reminder that "just stop mentioning climate change" isn't an option, as advocates, analysts and communicators.

The utterance of "A.I.'s inevitability" is one of the most stark pure performatives I've seen in my time working in higher ed. Every time it is uttered, it is clearly not reporting a fact about the world but instead actively trying to create the reality it narrates. We can and must refuse.

How to Organize Safely in the Age of Surveillance
From threat modeling to encrypted collaboration apps, we’ve collected experts’ tips and tools for safely and effectively building a group—even while being targeted and tracked by the powerful.
“I would like to say that the best encryption is the noisy bar where you're whispering to somebody. But we always do have to think about surveillance architecture, which is incredibly prevalent,” FPF's Harlo Holmes told @wired.com.

The Left Doesn't Hate Technology, We Hate Being Exploited
Techno-cynics are all just wounded techno-optimists.
SO GOOD! "the idea that my political ideology is synonymous with hating technology is confusing. Every leftist I know has a hard-on for high speed rail or mRNA vaccines. But the “left is missing out” blog positions generative AI as the only technology that matters." -- @xoxogossipgita.bsky.social

Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it
Workers should learn AI skills and companies should use it because it's a "cognitive amplifier," claims Satya Nadella.
Lots of them are panicking that AI uptake isn't fast enough and they might run out of momentum to do the sweep they are attempting to do on society.
This isn't about AI, it's about the window in which they have permission to remould society.

Eek. "In controlled experiments...AI systems successfully swayed political views in ways that should alarm anyone concerned about democratic integrity. The most unsettling part though was that the most persuasive models were also the ones spreading the most inaccurate information."

Four protesters have been found guilty of criminal damage at Teledyne's site in Yorkshire.
Documents we found show Teledyne exported to Israel at least twice from Nov-Dec 2023.
Shipments were addressed to near Israel's Hatzerim air base housing fighter jets and its Flight Academy.

Not only will it not, it seems to be verifiably doing the opposite!!

Überwachungstechnologie: Wie hartnäckig Palantir die Schweiz umwarb
Das umstrittene Tech-Unternehmen blitzte wieder und wieder ab. Teil 1 unserer Recherche.
The Swiss consider Palantir a security risk. In UK Mandelson takes Starmer to Palantir, and they hire MOD officials to hand over British intel over to the US.
p.s. Palantir sued the newspaper Republik for publishing this news.

"This thought keeps consoling me:
though tyrants may command that lamps be smashed
in rooms where lovers are destined to meet,
they cannot snuff out the moon, so today,
nor tomorrow, no tyranny will succeed,
no poison or torture make me bitter,
if just one evening in prison
can be so strangely sweet,
if just one moment anywhere on this earth."
The court victory for Pal Action today is incredible. The fight is not over, and this government has consistently proven that they act only in service of warfare and silencing protest.
But today I think of this extract from Faiz Ahmed Faiz's poem "A Prison Evening"...

A senior MoD official helps shape defence strategy, then joins Palantir.
Months later, Palantir lands a £240m MoD contract without tender.

He is a moral gravity-well from which neither decency, honesty or integrity can escape. A genuine disaster for this country and the Labour movement.”

Nordhaus labels ~3 °C warming “optimal” because it costs only ~2–3% of global GDP, roughly the size of the entire African economy!
The implication is stark: #climate damages on the scale of wiping out Africa can be treated as an acceptable cost of continued fossil fuel use. 🧵
