How we dumbed down teaching – and what we must do to fix it Over the past decade, teaching has been pushed towards a prescriptive model that reduces intellectual curiosity and overlooks essential classroom engagement, argues Sam Gibbs

The loss of teacher autonomy over the past decade threatens not only our pupils' education but also the future of the profession, warns @samgibbs.bsky.social

Some excellent advice in this thread - I’ve just added β€˜Gibbs’ to my muted words (fed up with intrusions from the Bee Gees πŸ˜‰)

Out for a drink with friends in an old favourite of mine in Sheffield but forgot my β€˜I don’t belong here’ sign #old πŸ‘΄πŸ»β˜ŽοΈπŸ’ΎπŸ˜†πŸ™ˆπŸ˜’πŸ˜

A few days since I deleted my X account and it’s bliss. I can still follow people for edu blogs, and on Bluesky, but without all the binary disparaging nonsense (missing a few sports people though, but I am not MIA scrolling either).

Left X for good… now need to find sport on here

Nationally I mean. In the local press. In performance tables.

I agree. But a measure where 50% of schools are going to be below zero is a demoralising approach. So is a measure where (we can guess) only 65% of the population will get 4+ in both English and maths. We all celebrate improvement (I’m no different) but we don’t celebrate the other stuff enough, imo

And for every school that improves another one has to see its P8 get worse…. It’s a relative measure; a zero sum. And I’m not underestimating the effort that improvement will have taken, it’s a fantastic effort. Just the way we are pitted against each other - especially on this day

Also, can we have something other than a national β€˜mean’ as the benchmark? Zero sum games in education need to stop if we’re serious about inclusion and collaboration, rather than rankings and competition imo

Why would a parent be interested in this measure though? (if that’s the argument for a report card?)

Interesting. I think I’d agree. I reckon there is a similarity to teach teachers new knowledge (eg behaviour routines, timings of the day, subject content, what to do at key points) than it is to change behaviours and instincts in the classroom πŸ€”

Good luck to Headteachers and staff who are awaiting the release of KS4 results from midnight. So much out of schools’ control with such variable attendance but so much worry and stress 🀞🏻🀞🏻

I hope it’s going well. I’m with TEAL doing all the jobs @jonnyuttley.bsky.social tells me to do πŸ˜‰ (they’re mostly quite enjoyable πŸ˜†).

Hi Donna. I know, I feel like I’ve moved to a place where everyone behaves and I’m going to ruin it for them πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

It’s been a while hasn’t it. I hope you’re keeping well πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

As I sit here with rising annual anxiety, I am really hoping that school and trust leaders can celebrate pupils’ achievements on Thursday without celebrating their schools’ comparative position to others in, what is after all, a zero-sum game. Fingers crossed for pupils and staff in all schools.
