As a classical music guy I was really surprised when you said you'd only heard Jupiter in funerals. I never had that association with it - when I watched the episode, all I thought was, "Oh, they're doing Jupiter from The Planets because it's outer space. What a neat little reference."

If I had a nickel for every time a promising progressive won the Democratic primary of a major New York race, and then the loser in the primary ran against them in the general election out of spite and disbelief and was roundly sent packing, I would have two nickels. But that's still amazing!

seeing someone want to solve a problem and then being told "you're buying into alt right nonsense if you think this problem is real". i think my feed is ok. but i also think that just because i can curate my way out of a problem doesn't mean I don't want the platform to make changes too

actually i think probably it's that i read the replies. although i think there is also some small portion of stuff that's doomerish that comes in through reposts even if I only follow people who post things I like. but tbh my responses here were mostly just a gut reaction to

like i get there are people who are out to make bluesky out to be a trash heap for political reasons but OP seems very obviously like someone who likes it here and posts here a lot but sometime takes gentle shots at the platform and its users

respectfully if you see someone mention bluesky in a post about a problem and then assume they mean only bluesky has this problem or that bluesky is worse than other platforms, maybe you are doing exactly the thing they are complaining about by projecting onto them a stance they don't hold?

That's true but I think people can have very different experiences on the same platform and I'm not surprised that it's getting back to Jay. And I think the fact that she cares about that and wants to try to make the experience better is good and is part of why the platform is as habitable as it is

like sure, i'm sick of people on the right claiming a platform is "biased" just because it sometimes shows them things that don't conform to their worldview. but i'm also sick of people pretending that if I don't want my feed to be a torrent of mindless rage and negativity I'm somehow anti-woke

this is a problem with every platform. it's not a "narrative" to say that people are constantly misinterpreting each other and twisting everyone's words online. twitter was also like this even when it was usable.

like I'm trying to be empathetic to the creator perspective that they want to maximize engagement and a better version of this would in theory help with that, but like... wouldn't it backfire if people knew the creator was just spamming auto reply with their eyes crossed?

The slop output is weird, but for me it's even weirder that whoever designed this thinks I'd ever in my life prefer to receive a canned reply from a machine instead of getting to engage directly with the creator who made something

this is the second game I've seen in a row from you where someone sees they're going to lose two (2) points of material and immediately resigns to you. is the game really lost when that happens at your level, or are your opponents being babies?

It makes me hopeful to see the Green brothers (Hank here and John in his tuberculosis book) articulate this point for a broad audience, when ten years ago it wasn't something I heard people even mention unless they were disabled or chronically ill themselves.

I think people consider generative AI useless because they're watching people use it for things that it shouldn't be used for. The fact that it's a new(ly good enough) technology means everyone is scrambling to somehow integrate it, even in cases where that doesn't make sense or is actively worse.

This is why I still think that the internet, not the issues, are the root cause of this culture war. People (including journalistsβ¦who are people) imagine the loudest, angriest positions as default positions because those are the ones that get eyeballs in an ultra-competitive attention economy.

To some extent the platforms (and especially algorithms) do this to us, but I think we also have some control over keeping our digital spaces level and habitable, and I don't think asking for that is the same thing as asking for people to just stop complaining about the world ever.

In 2020 when I switched from reading social media posts to reading the newspaper I became a lot calmer, and it wasn't because I was less informed or didn't know that COVID was happening, it was because everything wasn't being presented in panicked, hyperbolic 280-character little bites.

One of the worst things about the left leaning social media experience is this idea that shouting at each other about politics is not only a public service, but such an important one that it's a crime to do anything else.
