I think people consider generative AI useless because they're watching people use it for things that it shouldn't be used for. The fact that it's a new(ly good enough) technology means everyone is scrambling to somehow integrate it, even in cases where that doesn't make sense or is actively worse.

This is why I still think that the internet, not the issues, are the root cause of this culture war. People (including journalists…who are people) imagine the loudest, angriest positions as default positions because those are the ones that get eyeballs in an ultra-competitive attention economy.

Just as one example - and this is very colored by my growing up in the Northeast US - I've seen more antisemitic trash posted in Facebook groups *by Jews complaining about it* than I have from actual antisemites in my whole life.

"Well then imagine how tired we are of living with it" well, people who are living under oppression might be tired of hearing about it too? Like, it's staggering the amount of vile bigotry that I've been exposed to on the premise that someone on my own team wanted to complain about it.

To some extent the platforms (and especially algorithms) do this to us, but I think we also have some control over keeping our digital spaces level and habitable, and I don't think asking for that is the same thing as asking for people to just stop complaining about the world ever.

In 2020 when I switched from reading social media posts to reading the newspaper I became a lot calmer, and it wasn't because I was less informed or didn't know that COVID was happening, it was because everything wasn't being presented in panicked, hyperbolic 280-character little bites.

One of the worst things about the left leaning social media experience is this idea that shouting at each other about politics is not only a public service, but such an important one that it's a crime to do anything else.
