Very happy to go to Siccar Point any time with visiting geologists! And I can tell you all about the project I'm leading for Edinburgh Geological Society to improve access and interpretation as part of Hutton's Tercentenary next year.

The construction is pretty amazing, a lot of the stones used were already weathered, probably loose blocks (of basalt) from the base of the adjacent cliff.

But the footway is even more restricted due to a barrier on one side and scaffolding over the parapet. Is there no way that the contractors can use a bit less of the roadway to leave a bit more space for pedestrians? August is coming ...

I am so privileged to visit Siccar Point again and again (third time this week) and see it in different moods, and in the company of geologists and non-geologists all of whom see different aspects of this unique and special place. Just needs an ice cream van or gift shop for scale, don't you think?

We were robbed last night. When it’s our stock or our money that is targeted, there’s insurance and systems in place for this, but when it’s stealing from a charity in an extremely direct way then we just can’t abide it.

Pink granite surrounding and intruding into grey, layered sedimentary rocks.

Happy birthday to James Hutton - the Father of Modern Geology!

Hutton used Scottish rocks, like this exposure at Glen Tilt, to support theories of plutonism and deep time.

Here granite intrudes and surrounds sedimentary rocks - evidence these rocks were once molten
