That is unfortunately the case. I suppose at this point, I'm wondering about a drawable distinction between simple models and complex models taught in a digestible way. The examples you outlined in your period seem appropriate in that regard

I do think we've convinced ourselves that simple models are the only way forward without really thinking about how to implement complex ones. On the other hand, exam-culture incentivises buzzwords and makes students less receptive to less-than-straight-forward answers.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Ceræ at IMC 2026 CERÆ: An Australasian Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies invites submissions for hybrid panels at the Leeds International Medieval Conference 2026 (July 6-9) on the theme of Premodern Timeliness and Timelessness. Time is a construct with notoriously blurry definitions and boundaries. The artificiality of time can evoke anything from comforting nostalgia to worrying anachronism. Ceræ invites papers that deal with the unfocused and unreal aspects of premodern temporality, including but not limited to:

It's also clear when one realises that Mongol expressions of religion were never so essentialist. You weren't either a Mongol or a Muslim, or a Christian. Juggling various religious (or cultural) identites was not something inherently contradictory, nor did it overpower the imperial ideology.

I Dream of Ceræ: The Second Annual Conference, April 2025 Just over a fortnight ago, over the last weekend of April, the second annual Ceræ conference was conducted online with attendees and presenters from sixteen countries across eleven different timezones! Repeating our unique format from last year with a continuous single-stream over 32 hours, our presenters not only came from a multitude of institutions, but also represented the spectrum of career stage from distinguished professor to junior graduate student, and everyone in between.

Our conference ended 2 weeks ago, but registered participants can now view the recordings on our website. Read our review for more dreamy details.

Didn't have time to register and attend? You can still register with a reduced rate of $10 AUD until the end of June.
