Going back to the opening of chapter one. Katherina becomes a knight because she wins a tournament and that was the reward she requested.

It's the only formal competition in the story, but Katherina has figuratively and literally fought for everything she has in her life.

There's a lot of more positive contexts than chained to a wall in a dungeon while having to advocate for your life to a queen who is only thinking of protecting her daughter.

My spicy food take is that hot peppers are often too sweet for me to enjoy the taste of them in the context they've been added.
