A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. Spiral arms whirl outward, laced through with dark brown dust and bright blue patches of star formation.

Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.

A densely packed cluster of yellow stars shines at the center of the image, with more stars scattered throughout. Clouds of glowing indigo gas and dust dominate the lower half of the view, and a red star with diffraction spikes shines at upper right.

A nebula made up of cloudy gas and dust in the form of soft and wispy clouds and, in the center, thin and highly detailed layers pressed close together. Large, bright stars surrounded by six long points of light are dotted over the image, as well as some small, point-like stars embedded in the clouds. The clouds are lit up in blue close to the stars; orange colors show clouds that glow in infrared light.

Albert Einstein died on this day, April 18, 1955.

It is incredible to hear Albert Einstein explain his famous formula, E=mc².

If Navarro truly wanted to understand the development of America's trade deficit over the past several decades, he would do better to focus on why people in the major surplus economies have consistently spent less than they earned. He would also do well to study why the world's savers have long preferred to store their excess wealth in the United States and what that has meant for Americans. As we will ex-plain, starting with China, the answers have nothing to do with cultures of thrift or profligacy. Instead, they have everything to do with the distribution of income and the structure of the global monetary system.

Given recent developments, I’m forcing myself to read Klein and Pettis. A lengthy section — several pages — is devoted to “what Navarro needs to understand about global imbalances”.
