The bots are listening to sounds of water and nutrients flowing through the vascular body of the cacti. Their receptors are fine-tuned to hear this xylem music.

The hypersensitive surface receptors of the sample collectors record the energy given off by the hard-working cells of the sentient cactus. They record the sounds of the flow of water and nutrients in its vascular structure. Xylem music has some great hits. But only a sample collector would know.
