I should state that Lisa is still one of my favorites, especially her work with Dead Can Dance.

Ever since I discovered Nightwish at the end of May, I have found it hard to listen to anything else. But in the interest of variety, I offer one of my pre-NW favorites: Lisa Gerrard.

Most of the acorns are of northern red oak (Quercus rubra), a species that always seems to produce a lot every year.
06.10.2025 17:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I once planted acorns and other nuts one by one but found that the establishment rate was very low and the reward was not worth the effort. I now leave nuts in a pile in the midst of an area in which I desire them to establish and let squirrels and chipmunks do the work for me. π°

But there is one further mystery. All of the raccoons seem to have survived the fall unharmed, for there was no sign of them at the base of the tree. There was some scat on the trail leading away from the campsite.
A Forest Mystery (Part 7 of 8)
I conclude that the snarling raccoon was pursing the whimpering raccoons and that the latter climbed the tree in order to escape. A female with grown cubs being harassed by an aggressive male?
A Forest Mystery (Part 6 of 8)
The tree was full of walnuts, but 1. raccoon teeth are not suited to opening the very hard shells of black walnuts, and 2. there were plenty of walnuts on the ground.
A Forest Mystery (Part 5 of 8)
My conclusion is that enough raccoons (which are adept climbers) were on the branch to have cleanly broken it off. But why were they up there?
A Forest Mystery (Part 4 of 8)
The branch fell from a height of about forty feet. The stub can be seen on two of the images, pointing upward and to the left. The question is, what brought the branch down?
A Forest Mystery (Part 3 of 8)
The next morning, I found that a sizeable branch (about 15β long and 3β in diameter at its base) had fallen from the black walnut (Juglans nigra) adjacent to the campsite. It was a living branch without any decay.
A Forest Mystery (Part 2 of 8)
I have heard the sounds in the past, and I believe them to be raccoons (Procyon lotor), which seem to have a surly disposition. The animal sounds ended when I heard the crack of breaking wood.
A Forest Mystery (Part 1 of 8)
I recently camped at my Lapeer County site in order to enjoy the nighttime songs of tree crickets (Oecanthinae) and avoid time wasted in transit. At one point I awoke to the sounds of animal activity in my campsite, sounds best described as snarling and whimpering.πΏ
