A #Bikebus attracts families that normally drive to #school. Today 60 kids in Edinburgh cycled to school in the 6 bike buses that ran across #edinburgh. That's 40 less cars polluting the city. It's an easy, safe, healthy and fun way to reducing congestion Let's roll it out to all school

A large group of cycle users - in reflective jackets and vests, some with helmets, and their bikes festooned with a range of fairy lights and neon, gather at the end of a ride, lighting up the dark, wide open public space in front of McEwan hall in Edinburgh, an impressive domed sandstone structure five or six storeys high and warmly lit against the dark night sky.

My Favourite Bike Ride: #SpokesComp results

For many people, a favourite ride is a weekend cycle to and through places of great natural beauty or historic interest. But our entries showed that it can also be your daily commute, taking your mind off work; or a school bike bus with its amazing enthusiasm and hope for the future. Our lovely entrants showed just how much cycling can mean to people in so many different ways.

We were also delighted to get a good range of entries from the Lothians, with West and East Lothian entries winning 3rd and 4th positions.

The Standard. Peak rail fares scrapped in Scotland in 'historic moment'.

This week trains in Scotland got cheaper! ๐Ÿš†

Our public transport must be accessible, reliable and affordable.

That's why we've worked so hard alongside unions and passengers to scrap peak fares on our railways, and provide free travel for young people on our buses and ferries.

Edinburgh groups unite to save Bike Network

Led by Edi.Bike and Spokes, Edinburgh active travel groups have combined to urge councillors to approve the traffic orders which make permanent the legal framework for the โ€˜Travelling Safelyโ€™ segregated bike lanes on main roads in the city. Without urgent approval, the first of the orders, covering the East of the city, will fall โ€“ and these routes, used by commuters, school pupils and leisure cyclists, will be removed.

Under the Councilโ€™s Mobility Plan, the cityโ€™s future โ€˜Primary Cycle Networkโ€™ will mainly comprise segregated bike lanes on main roads, and it had been widely expected that the โ€˜Travelling Safelyโ€™ bike lanes would form the initial embryonic network.

To make this happen, the Experimental Traffic Orders (ETROs) which enable the bike lanes, have to be made permanent โ€“ the first of these, for East Edinburgh, in the near future. However, at the May 12 TRO Subcommittee (which makes the final decision) an intervention by Cllr Lang resulted in a decision being postponed. At a specially-called meeting on 7 August, the same happened again. The final opportunity to save the East Travelling Safely lanes, which include vital safe routes to schools sections, will be at a further meeting on 4 September, where the West and North schemes are also expected to be discussed, with their closing dates following later.

CYCLE NETWORK 2025
Year 2025 will not see any truly groundbreaking bike
route openings like 2024โ€™s CCWEL / Roseburn-Canal
schemes, which were revolutionary for Edinburgh.
However, by the end of 2025 the Council will decide
whether to make the existing main-road Spaces for
People routes legally permanent. Assuming so, this
will form the initial core of what the Council calls its
Primary Cycle Network* largely following main roads,
โ€œthe most direct, flattest, most socially safe routesโ€
and reflecting Transport Scotlandโ€™s โ€˜Active Freewayโ€™
concept of โ€œhigh quality, direct and segregated.โ€
Once legally permanent, a rolling programme of
improvements should follow, particularly at junctions
and replacing bollards by kerb-segregation.
The bollarded routes are currently legal under ETRO
experimental orders. A report to Transport Committee
is expected in early autumn, based on monitoring and
consultation feedback, for a final decision on the
ETROs: hopefully retaining and improving the routes
and building them into a more connected network.

Intro to our public meeting article, with picture of cargobike carrying children

Cargobikes in Edinburgh: #SpokesMtg

Cargobikes are seen more and more in Edinburgh, and the potential is massive, as in many European cities and elsewhere around the world. Our public meeting on 2 September will feature the 90-minute documentary film MOTHERLOAD โ€“ a motherโ€™s experience of how cargo bikes can be an antidote to the increasing isolation, disconnection, and planetary impact of life in C21. The meeting will then hear from local organisations in the forefront of cargobike development in Edinburgh

โ€œFilmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Motherhood was challenging, but to Liz hauling babies via car felt stifling. She Googled โ€œfamily bikeโ€ and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.โ€

The film has now appeared in over 600 venues around the globe, making the case for cargobikes โ€“ and not just for families, but for a wide range of transport purposes worldwide.
