I asked my husband tonight if we could get a horse bc my bike betrayed me today and as a former horse girl I know horses don’t just tip over like that.

The movie hasn’t replaced the book! That’s why it’s an adaptation! Now we have both. It’s a cool fun cover song. Anyway that’s my rant!

But the whole “it’s not like the book” criticism is so tired to me because it’s going to exist as long as adaptations do and no one is ever going to be satisfied so we may as well just enjoy what a director does with the source material AND enjoy that we have the source material.

Yeah i think she made some intentional choices that would not have translated well these days (ie turning abuse into a sub/dom relationship that was more female centered) and also she is just very into making the audience uncomfortable. I get if people don’t like her directing style, that’s fine!

No exactly. I majored in English and LOVED gothic literature but learned long ago that you have to just have fun with adaptations and enjoy them as a separate art (cinema) or else you will go nuts. And as cinema, specifically an emerald fennel film who we know has her own style, this was great.
