So we have around a $3K/year savings plus excess power to charge our EV. The two heat pumps cost around $8K to install, so our break even point was less than 3 years, so now we enjoy the $3K savings along with the knowledge that we dramatically reduced our carbon footprint.

Before installing the heat pumps we were buying around $2K of electricity per year, now the solar system provides more electricity than we consume (even with a new ev) so we actually have a credit. Then the bonus is we also use the heat pumps to heat in our mild winters, eliminating all gas heating

A couple of years ago I installed two mini-split heat pumps in the two areas of the house where we spend most of our time. Those areas stay a cool 74 degrees and some of the cool air seeps into the rest of the house where it is a bit warm, but not uncomfortable.

I can confirm similar results for our house in the desert. House is 2700 ft2 near Palm Springs, originally with two 5 ton central AC units and a 5.5 Kw grid tied solar system. The vast majority of our electrical usage is for AC in the very hot summer months.
