I agree that is a whole lot of ableism that underscores this response. Being immunocompromised is an “acceptable” reason to care about Covid to them, while others are disregarded. The cultural impact of previous pandemics/endemics have taken time to fully show up in culture. 5 years isn’t that long.

That’s what happened with AIDS too. There was denial for over a decade until the impacts became too great to deny.

As someone who has been in several of these conversations I’ve tried to point out the elephant in the room. They sincerely can’t wrap their head around it. It’s not real to them yet.

I propose an alternative framing: we’re still in the middle of a pandemic and learning to deal with a novel virus. The full impacts haven’t happened.

It could be years until we see COVID in art/writing, just like how AIDS took decades to enter the mainstream political and cultural consciousness.

While this is good, this is pretty technocratic in the middle of a crisis. There's a lot of assumptions that this will even be possible: but without more concrete action the rule of law may become a moot point.

It's time to restructure the whole system that created ICE.
