More People Are Having Abortions At Home. Here's Who They Call When They Have Nowhere Else To Turn. Since Roe v. Wade fell, many callers are filled with concern: โ€œIf I go to the emergency room, will they call the police?โ€

I spoke with Dr. April Lockley, medical director of the Miscarriage and Abortion hotline, who has fielded questions from hundreds of people managing their abortions at home.

Doctors are asking for permission? Thatโ€™s nice to hear, in a way. (I donโ€™t use AI but itโ€™s not standard practice to ask for permission in some places Iโ€™ve workedโ€ฆ) Totally agree about the power differential, though.

Oh, I misunderstood. Thatโ€™s good at least! The one thing I donโ€™t miss about Epic is the chat functionโ€ฆ

Especially when my response 99% of the time is either, โ€œPlease make an appointment so we can discuss this furtherโ€ or โ€œIโ€™d be happy to discuss this at your next appointment.โ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Some arguments from the abortion debate over when life starts seem strikingly relevant: why should the appearance of a few familiar traits that offer the potential of personhood in the future permit this thing to displace certainly-people right now?

weโ€™re also living through intense anti-science backlash. as a primary doc, i have patients requesting tests that donโ€™t even exist outside of research labs, that have zero evidence to support their clinical usefulness - but chatgpt told them this test is the one โ€œtheyโ€ donโ€™t want you to know about.

Oh, I 1000% agree about OB care! That should absolutely be the top priority, given how many rural areas are absolute maternity deserts.

Iโ€™m not EM, but I think itโ€™s an equity issue. APPs have vastly different training and experience levels vary. For low acuity care, it may be appropriate but you can never predict when high acuity cases will arise. Rural hospitals should be funded so they can recruit and retain physicians.

I fully believe that AI will be used against doctors and patients. Doctors will be expected to use โ€œtime savedโ€ to work longer hours. Staff (RNs, MAs, pharm techs) will be laid off. And patients will suffer from AI errors and data privacy issues. Not to mention the environmental costsโ€ฆ

07.02.2026 16:27 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Totally agree. Doctors, especially in primary care, are overwhelmed. Weโ€™re being pushed by our employers to see more and more patients in less and less time with ever-increasing demand for documentation and insurance-related paperwork. But AI sure as hell isnโ€™t the fix for that.

07.02.2026 16:24 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

But now thereโ€™s a decent chance your doctor is using ambient AI to document your medical chart and consulting AI when theyโ€™re unsure of your diagnosisโ€ฆ Trust me, medicine is as deeply uncritical of AI as any techbro.

We had no way of anticipating how the car would revolutionize the landscape. With it came highways, streets, drunk driving, day trips to the sea, road rage, etc etc. We weren't intentional in how we adopted the car nor how we adopted the EMR. What culture do we intend to create with AI? 10/10

Iโ€™m excited to share "Anatomy of a Decision," a new resource that uses the "Narrative Laboratory" of Greyโ€™s Anatomy to teach rigorous Medical Ethics. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ“–

Bioethics doesn't have to be sterile. Weโ€™re taking the drama of Grey Sloan Memorial and putting it under the philosophical microscope to explore:

1. Celluloid Jesus (representations of Jesus in film)
2. Shakespeareโ€™s Sexual Politics
3. Dostoevsky
4. Anthropology of Fertility and Reproduction
5. Beginning Dutch

Sorry, but I just donโ€™t believe that creating more medical schools will solve the crisis of primary care. We have to actually address why this job is unsustainable for many practicing docs and unattractive to students and trainees. #fmsky

A doctor who witnessed the shooting submits a sworn declaration in federal litigation to halt ICE surge in MN:

"I did not see him attack the agents or brandish a weapon of any kind."

and

"The victim had at least three bullet wounds in his back."

every dollar our government spends on โ€œmaternity homesโ€ for juicing the #adoption industryโ€™s domestic infant supply is a dollar not spent on giving pregnant women the support they need to keep their own children

This is Minneapolis:

Iโ€™m at a major healthcare clinic (just here for a friend) and overheard the front desk staff mention theyโ€™ve had 97 missed appointments today.

People arenโ€™t getting medical care bc theyโ€™re afraid to leave home.

#COVID19 vaccination before or during pregnancy was associated with lower risks of hospitalization, ICU admission, and preterm birth among those infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Canada.

I appreciate your thoughts on this. My current employer uses an ambient AI scribe program for charting, which I refuse to use. Itโ€™s astounding to me the absolute lack of any critical thought on AI among doctors. Itโ€™s all just breathless wishcasting about how this tech will save us.

what if you take every "new year, new you" you see this year and

change the meaning from "make yourself smaller because smaller is better, make sure you're never too big"

change the meaning to "fatness is neutral, fatness is good, take fatness off the criteria list for how you eat"

Among OB/GYN practices in LA County managed #Medicaid networks, fewer than 1 in 10 reachable clinics provided abortion care, and most imposed early gestational limits or out-of-pocket costs, contrary to state law.
