If authors have the prerogative to unpublish in a way where archivalists can be compelled to destroy their copies, then people suing those authors have the ability to demand unpublishing as a condition of judgement/settlement. It would be a monumental attack on the integrity of the public record.

Attempting to erase already-published speech from the record has always been an unacceptable act of censorship, even if the one doing it is the author. It exists in culture now. It's part of the weave of history. Attempting to rip it out just adds "you tried to rip it out" to the tapestry.

Until modern copyright, an era of history that is as short as a blink of an eye, libraries had the prerogative to copy books as many times as they wanted. They were *expected* to. For their preservation (way easier to preserve words than paper/parchment/etc), and for sharing with other libraries.
