Federal Agents Storm South Shore Building, Detaining Families and Children Families were woken by flashbangs and helicopters as hundreds of federal agents raided their homes. Days later, neighbors are still searching for the missing.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

Might go and hang around with my friends from Pandora this evening. I’m a sucker for stuff shot in 3D. Add in HFR? Baby, you’ve got a stew going.

In the Mood for Clues | Bright Wall/Dark Room I’m drawn to Clue and In the Mood for Love, two movies that probably couldn’t be more different, because in both, characters use storytelling to investigate their cratered lives.

Alien: Earth Clings to Childish Things In throwing out Ridley Scott’s prequel mythology to engineer a β€œparallel story,” Noah Hawley’s series was deprived of the chance to grow up.

This is pretty great on Alien:

there’s a scene in the new documentary where Elizabeth Taylor is talking about the stigma of AIDS and how she got involved in the movement and it’s fucking everything

Reposting for the night crowd. This is really about how Redford knew, and threw himself into, the power of platforming independent art.

As an Activist, Robert Redford Understood the Power of Celebrity

My appreciation of Robert Redford, the star of THE CANDIDATE, who knew the power of the camera and tried to turn it in the right direction.

It's not an overstatement to say that through Sundance -- festival, Institute, the whole thing -- Redford pretty much changed the trajectory of my life, and I'm profoundly grateful.

Redford's life was long, as was his career, which began on Broadway and in NY-based TV 65 years ago. But when I woke up to the news of his loss, I gasped. It felt like a face had fallen from Mount Rushmore--although if anyone had tried to carve him into a mountainside, he'd have led the protest.

What Robert Redford contributed to American films via Sundance is genuinely immeasurable. He was also an extraordinarily talented director--Ordinary People and Quiz Show are two of the best American studio movies of their eras--and an actor who somehow wore his incredible charisma almost shyly. RIP.

The best (& also, the most entertaining, scary, wild, darkly funny, sharply argued & boldly written) book on this subject is Black Pill by Elle Reeves. She nails the chaotic right-wing edgelord landscape in a way no other writer has, the psychology and sexuality of it, not just the ideology
