This week, Kai Redfield explores Japan's underground music scene and how doujin illustrators have played an invaluable role in defining the aesthetics and vibes of the landscape. It's a fantastic read, and we hope you enjoy it. 💖

i play way too many sokoban games for my own good, and steam is having a sokoban fest, so here's my recommendations: store.steampowered.com/category/box...

A port of the PS2 version that included an exclusive route for a completely new character voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi.
in another server, i’ve been thinking why band girl stories feel so resonant right now. and the sociological brain in me thinks it has to do with the ongoing relationship crisis. never mind the fertility rate, we don’t couple up a lot these days. people are seeking alternative relationships (usually digital) and pleasures (video games, entertainment) since the traditional relationship of a het couple is failing.
these band stories are interesting safe spaces to find new conceptions of kinship structures. bands are really just found families, so it’s interesting to explore the relationships found in them. it’s not like bocchi and hiroi are unconditionally loved by their respective band members, but they are just seen as members of a coalition. everyone learns to tolerate other people’s quirks and flaws, as opposed to more traditional relationships found in families (partnership, siblings) whom we don’t get to choose to be with — we are forced to. these relationships are chaotic as seen in the many band girl shows and books out there, but they are as valid (perhaps more) than the relationship of yesteryear.
in a sense, i think while we are in a relationship recession or crisis, it only applies to the usual paths to a “good life” for a nuclear family. band stories show that there are possible ways to create familial bonds that may be more resistant and adaptive to our social media fragmented lives i also said that my main actual non-meme reason i’ve been not so hot over bokita shipping is because it almost feels antithetical to the manga’s direction. if bocchi actually lost her anxiety and was able to assimilate to society, i think it would be a more standard and boring manga about how you just need a kita in your life to get back to society.
what i think makes bocchi the manga so special to me is that it never does that. the “unconventional” lives these characters lead are just as valid as the usual salaryman life. they just suffer and experience joy in different ways from the usual narratives. i think that’s what i like about the series the most: the musician’s hectic life is just a Normal thing, not something out of this world. i don’t think bocchi is like an anti-society manga. but it’s like how subcultures are not necessarily countercultures today. they can live in the shadows of the mainstream culture. there’s a place for bocchi; it just isn’t society but in the music subcultures of shimokitazawa. that’s what i find uplifting about the manga, that even fuckups like hiroi and bocchi have their own place. just have to find it somewhere in the massive world of subcultures.
extra thoughts on bocchi the rock and the recent rise of band girl anime and manga in the so-called relationship recession period we're in right now:

It's very minor but I need it. I don't know if anyone else cares though. I can't easily open 500 tabs like this.
