19.02.2025 12:20 — 👍 5 🔁 2 💬 0 📌 0Following the success of our Politicised Nostalgias conferences last summer, I am moving ahead with Arc Humanities Press to deliver an ongoing series titled Political Nostalgias. Our second planned volume, Political Nostalgias in the Modern and Contemporary World, has an exciting set of chapters already established, but women are underrepresented in the volume. Brief description: Nostalgia, defined most simply as a wistful or sentimental longing for a past period or set of conditions, has played a significant role in the shaping of historical and contemporary political discourses. This volume explores the role of nostalgia in modern and contemporary politics around the globe, exposing the often seamy underbelly of what can be assumed to be a positive emotional state. Nostalgia for a lost past (or a past that has really never been) may spur political actors on to build a better world – but better for whom, and on whose terms? While nostalgia can induce a positive emotional response in some, not all efforts to deploy idealized visions of the past are successful, marginalizing some and creating a more complex emotional landscape than may have been envisioned. Movements that push back against nostalgia as a means of political engagement further test assumptions about nostalgia’s perceived role in different societies. This series takes a global perspective to explore the ways in which collective nostalgia has been—and continues to be—both harnessed to justify a spectrum of political ends and contested. We welcome 200-250-word abstracts for 6000-word chapters of modern or contemporary history that engage with nostalgia. We particularly welcome contributions that focus on the Global South, but will consider all submissions from scholars who define themselves as women. Though please note, we do not currently require more chapters on British history, and we do not require North American history as there is a whole volume planned on this theme for later in the series …
