the real head scratcher would be is peanut oil a seed oil, because definitionally it absolutely is but I'm pretty sure most of these people exclude it on vibes and love five guys and chick fil a

ultimately none of the obvious pitfalls make any sense for the large file use case - poor bulk speed is a matter of bad fundamentals [i.e. wrong buffer size, not doing direct i/o, etc] not any of the bells and whistles a gui actually "needs"

doing that shouldn't add any significant amount of extra processing time though, especially in the case of a small number of large files.

[heck the *other* thing guis often waste time on - precalculating total size for progress bars - also shouldn't be a big deal for large files]

screenshot of two posts from bluesky

the first is by Will Stancil: "people get angry when you say this but it's been the dominant fact of US politics for some time and is getting worse. most people hated Biden because they saw a lot of other people hating him on their phones. people liked Trump more in 2024 because he took on a kind of goofy-uncle role on Tiktok"

The second is the post that was quoted in the first post of this thread.

why is the number of NOPs a parameter? Isn't the number needed theoretically architecture-dependent, and is there any other reason to change it?

stack overflow is IRC.

As a mild disclaimer in case it doesn't work, I only tested it in my translated C version (replacing all references with pointers) though I think I did compile it as both C and C++

17.06.2025 20:58 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

wait, C++ doesn't let you make a reference to the 'object' pointed to by the end pointer?

like i assumed that internally the reference is basically just a pointer, it's not *actually* dereferenced until you access the value.

17.06.2025 07:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'd wonder if there's some obscure language in the standard about not touching padding bits, but it doesn't work A) even if i change index to a long or B) in C, either.

It *does* work on a struct of two pointers (even two different pointers), or two longs, though.

17.06.2025 07:01 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

and i don't know if the default client doesn't set it on posts (docs claim it does) or if it just doesn't *use* it when *viewing* posts, but one way or the other as far as i can tell there's no lang markup on any of the posts in this thread in the web client.

15.06.2025 02:04 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

apparently the bsky protocol has language metadata in the form of a list of languages in a post, but seemingly no way to define what spans are in what language, which seems like a poor fit for the HTML use case.

Reeves Superman is all pre-Spaceballs so I didn't bother with the question of whether it was in continuity or not. But if Returns isn't in continuity with Batman Begins that'd make for at least three definite continuities since.

12.06.2025 20:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

The weirder thing is that they're not counting any non-MCU Marvel movies, which is another 35 movies across an unclear number of continuities.

12.06.2025 20:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I *think* they are ignoring pre-Begins Batman, ignoring anything animated, and counting Begins/TDK/R and Superman Returns together as one DCU, and counting the DCEU as the second DCU?

12.06.2025 19:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 2    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

It probably depends on how you count DCUs. Do Batman-only continuities count, are the pre-Begins Batman movies in continuity with each other, do animated continuities count, is Teen Titans in the DCAU, etc.

(note: i had incorrectly calculated the 'estimated' tax percentage based on the subtotal, when including the fees it is the correct 9%. but why the hell is it 'estimated' anyway, and why is half the fee hidden in that line instead of the other fee line)

Two Sausage McMuffins; 5.18 doordash vs 2.99 in person.
Two Hash Browns; 4.78 vs 2.79
(both of these have buy one get one for $1 deals that are not honored by doordash)
Steak Egg Cheese Bagel 8.19 vs 6.29
Subtotal is 12.07 vs 18.15
Declared Delivery Fee is 2.99
Declared other fee is 3.00
Estimated Tax is 2.17 [I marked this as a 12% rate on the subtotal, but it's more likely it's a correct 9% rate on the subtotal plus fees.]

The doordash total comes to 26.31 before tip, nearly twice the in person total of 13.16.

Everyone knows Doordash inflates menu prices to make more money, but how many people really stop to check how much? Here's a recent order I got in person at the drive through.
