She wasn't elected as an SJW choice but rather her frustration with council's plodding pace reflected voter's anger. She was elected to shake things up, get things going.

Working against Masters was not only that she was a woman but also that she was a change agent. When she took over, city hall was ossified by the Fougere Consensus which had dominated since the 00s.

(And arguably, Fiacco was the mayor best situated in time to actually deal with our current housing crisis. And don't think he didn't have ample warning about the long term ramifications of city policy back then.)

And look… this is coming from someone who spent four years critiquing decisions coming from Masters & Anderson. I was hardly their ideological fellow traveller.

That Masters hasn't been mayor for over 8 months & I'm still seeing references to her online that are disturbingly close to "lock her up" is deeply disappointing.
