If you want to read about how a public hearing is going in Vancouver, the city provides a bespoke service exclusively to a few dozen X users.

But last night, they seemed to give up providing any final update at all.

UPDATE: after four hours of hearing from the public last night, it got past midnight, and council decided to delay their vote until the end of February.

because when you’ve been waiting 19 years to build a school, what’s another two weeks?

It's so absurdly funny to me how mad people on the Vancouver reddit get if you call Metro Vancouver "the GVA"

Here's a fun chart I made, documenting the number of letters in favour of every public hearing proposal in Vancouver over the last 12 months.

Only about 1 in 5 rezonings generate any real positive feedback, but the Olympic Village School eclipses everything out.

Even the mighty sauna.

Tonight, Vancouver council will have a public hearing for a school 19 years in the making

There's some community opposition to the project β€” but there's also the bigger question of why it takes the provincial and municipal governments 19 years to approve a single school

Peter was announced on stage as an approved council candidate and will compete for one of the approved number of OneCity slots (to be determined by progressive party negotiations) in a primary

Correction: Azaroff won by about 400 votes.

A shade under 60%.

It’s a reflection of the type of focus OneCity has become: very pro-housing development, urbanist, centre-left without being too tied to the NDP.

William Azaroff has won the OneCity mayoral nomination.

He defeated Amanda Burrows by about 150 votes.

One of the more depressing parts of my job is trying to explain to folks that 98% of the time politicians are passing laws or advocating for positions because they sincerely believe it will improve their communities, instead of Shadowy Forces Paying Councillors To Ignore The True Voice Of The People

Tumbler Ridge is a small planned resource community, a winding 90 minute drive from the nearest city of at least 10,000 people.

A massive number of people are going to descend there tomorrow.

May those that arrive have respect and grace for the unimaginable grief.

Two additional people have been found dead at a location believed to be connected to the shooting.

Whoever said β€œnever meet your heroes” never met Jim Robson.

Spent an afternoon with him in 2019 for a story with @danburritt.bsky.social, and he showed us his old notes, took us to where he called games at Pacific Coliseum, and was as patient and kind as could be.

What a wonderful human.

Jim Robson did what he loved, was revered by a province, was the nicest man you can imagine, and two weeks ago, just after turning 91, was out smiling and watching his favourite hockey team.

May we all be so kind, lucky and blessed.

Vancouver's auditor general criticizes city over lack of paper trail for lost developer amenities | CBC News Vancouver’s auditor general said the city engaged in β€œserious wrongdoing” when they failed to track whether $6 million in promised community amenities for a much-publicized downtown tower ever happene...

Vancouver staff told council that if it rezoned land so a developer could build a big tower, the developer would spend $6 million on making the surrounding area nice.

The city’s auditor general found that didn’t happen, and that staff basically shrugged their shoulders about it.
