Then once they’re on the hook show them The City on the Edge of Forever and you’ll make them cry and be fans forever.

A great way to get people into Star Trek is to show them The Trouble with Tribbles and then Balance of Terror back-to-back. It gets people to engage with the camp and humor and then be receptive to the kinds of stories important to Star Trek. I’ve done this with multiple people. It works!

A fun thing about Star Trek world building is in TOS everyone in Starfleet loves getting drunk in space. Then 80 years later in TNG they’re like “we no longer think it’s smart to get drunk in space but now we’re obsessed with chocolate and caffeine”

People in sci-fi novels are always naming their exploratory vessels shit like ICARUS and IXION and while I am not superstitious, I would maybe go with the USS GOT-THERE-SAFELY.

there are fun ways to have characters talk to themselves, but i guarantee you it's never to explain things that are important to the plot. #scriptsky

and before you share a clip of a movie that pulls this off, you need to honestly answer these questions:
1. are you as good a writer as the writer who wrote whatever masterpiece you're itching to use to prove your point?
2. but...are you really, honestly as good that writer?

whenever a character talks to themselves in a scene, i instantly clock that the writer:
1. doesn't trust their story
2. doesn't trust their visuals
3. doesn't trust the reader #scriptsky

writers i'm begging you to stop having a character talk to themselves to explain their actions, thoughts, or motivations in a scene. it's always clunky. #scriptsky

Gadfly: Was that the philosophy of the movie? You know, you mentioned all those great directors of the past. They all had a philosophy. What was your philosophy?

La[deadname]: We think that not only gay people or queer people live in closets. Everybody does. We all tend to put ourselves into these boxes, these traps. And so what we tried to do is we tried to define as many of the characters through the sort of trap that they were making out of their lives. Getting out of the closet was meant to take on a bigger meaning than just the typical gay meaning.
