The changes to Nicholl were a bit of a kick - that was a mainstay comp for me. Have been thinking about Austin, but there's no way I'd visit the U.S. at the moment - and I get the sense it has consistency issues?

I did a lot my first year with DUST ON DIRT (the equivalent of attending the opening of an envelope) and fewer with NO GHOSTS TONIGHT. Haven't been doing many lately because I've been working on the new thing.

I suspectt the Guardian is laying the ground to pivot anti-immigrant - just like they already went anti-trans.

Why else publish this without critique?

Honest Government Ad | Social Media Ban

This absolutely nails why the Australian social media ban for U16 is such a *predictably* bad idea. Brilliantly done.

Probably. They really need to get rid of Starmer and Mahmood and change course: they're both complete and utter liabilities.

And there's something about the Home Office culture that I think makes bad people worse.

One of the bleak things about this *stupid* idea, is that it feels as though Labour could have just as easily come up with it.

Statistical regression to the mean and all that.

And they don't seem to remember that in Snowcrash, the reason Hiro and Juanita can have an honest conversation in the Metaverse is because the emotional expression modelling was done by her using their specific faces.

And she was kind of dubious about the whole thing.

Enraged, Kyle ignores him. He’s lost it - he’s not stopping.
Joe raises the shotgun...

EXT. SCRUBBY HOLLOW - UNDER THE CARAVAN - TORI’S POV

The shotgun BLASTS (O.S.). Painful SCREAMS (O.S.) - muted - distant - heard through ringing ears.

The caravan’s undercarriage closes in around Tori - pulsing with the POUNDING of her heart. Her vision narrows to a tunnel. The SCREAMING (O.S.) won’t stop - it’s too much.

Here's how I tried to write it in my latest one FWIW. I felt like it needed to be tied into a characters POV.

When this regime comes to an end - and it is already cracking - there will be pressure to 'move on' and 'unify' and 'look to the future'.

When that happens, remember that - sooner or later - this is what they had waiting for you.

Torture Techniques from CIA Black Sites Were Used at Alligator Alcatraz Amnesty International, interviewing migrant detainees, identifies use of the confinement box. There can be no denying it is a torture prison

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

This ill-considered law is going to lead to data breaches.

It is also going to make life more isolating and miserable - and frankly - dangerous for some kids.

And it sets a bad precedent that will be used internationally (looking at the U.K.).

The Australian Labour Party won't be getting any love from me.
This is about an attack on freedom of speech and privacy - not child protection. If they cared about that, they'd be prioritising addressing family violence and sexual harrassment in schools.

Reminders, as public health officials warn of a very bad flu season:

🧡

* Washing hands is not a strategy for a respiratory virus. N95s, ventilation, air filtration -- especially in hospitals.

* We should have been cleaning indoor air with the same effort we put into cleaning drinking water.

So euphemistic too... 'flu like illness'. We have tests - it's not like it has to be a mystery.

I thought y’all were trying to turn the temperature down? To curb toxic posting? To make social media more friendly? How does trolling your own users fit into that mission? Genuine question.

Yep - there are a few people that are the living embodiment of 'the enemy of your enemy is not your friend' and she's one of them.

Adapting a murder mystery (a new thing for me) - and it feels very dialogue heavy, compared to how I usually write. To some extent it might be a genre thing (I'm mostly write thrillers) - and it'll pare back in rewrites to some extent.

But curious if this often happens when adapting?

My (silly) theory is that they've lost that monstrous frog thing, since Portland took it back, so they're frantically casting about for a reptilian replacement.

Yeah - 'cos that exact 'strategery' is working so well in the U.K..

NYT was already a pretty shit newspaper back in the late '90s - insular, parochial - unable to countenance any kind of internationalist perspective. And I guess they've only gone downhill since.

When I was a production assistant on The Office, the only writing of mine that anyone read was the catering menu I typed up each day for the crew. But I realized the menu was my chance to impress the writers. So here’s a quick #Scriptsky #Screenwriting thread on HIDDEN OPPORTUNITIES.

My background's in classical music and FWIW that shapes a lot of how I think about story structure, and sound (both diegetic and how things sound when read aloud).

The more widely one can look the better I reckon.

Yep. Leaving the E.U. was always going to mean being less able to negotiate effectively, less well defended and having fewer freedoms (less freedom of movement for young U.K. people for one).

I feel sorry for the people who voted to stay: the people who voted leave - not so much tbh.
