Lot of talk about the Iowa budget deficit being $1 billion, but it’s important to remember that the current budget doesn’t include many necessities. Paid leave is just one example. Add it all up and the real budget deficit is likely over $2 billion annually.

With more tax revenue the state could fund more childcare, more paid leave, more infrastructure improvements… Straightforward calculus.

I don’t know how many people there are and just how much money exactly they aren’t paying in taxes, but there are a number of people with very high incomes who do not need the extra $20k they will keep or whatever. And that’s before you even get to people like me, who could pay more tax too.

It’s funny (not actually funny) that Republicans are now doing the ”refuse to fund the black candidate who is begging for the thankless job” when Democrats did the same thing last time.

Others charted it at the time, but the unwinding of the explicit COVID public health policies during the Biden admin laid a nice path for this by ceding the ground when we should have been defending public health.

Two stories about corruption near the end of this that stood out for how matter of fact the reporting was. Forget the exact details something like someone was appointed US Attorney as a nepo case and then the other was a donor to Trump inaugural getting an admin post. Ho hum just how things work.

The state house elections of 2026 are the most direct line to real regulation of farm pollution in Iowa.

Laehn appears to be a libertarian true believer but is extremely boring. Still, an independent minded senator who takes the job seriously could have some appeal when Presidents from both parties suck.

The crowds keep growing for change in Iowa. The Iowa 100 will be the first step, by passing a legislative agenda that addresses real needs and will make immediate improvements.
