Congratulations to the newest Hall of Famer, Jeff Kent. Fun fact (?): The Tracker was a thing for all 10 years of Jeff Kent's run on the BBWAA ballot. He received a total of 998 votes over that decade from the writers and the Tracker was able to log 774 of those as public votes (77.6%). Fun!

Looks like the only one of these inductees who had been previously honored in the various Latin American-based Halls of Fame is Carmelo Martรญnez. He was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004. In 35 CARS games, he hit 10 HR, batted .277, and slugged .589. He was MVP in 1987.

We just covered the White Brothers in our latest episode! James was the HOFโ€™er but Willโ€™s career was sneaky amazing - if multiple 40 win seasons can be sneaky.

Aw man, RIP George Altman. After appearing with the 1955 Kansas City Monarchs, he finally made the majors in 1959 with the Cubs. He was an All-Star in 1961 (.303, 27 HR, 96 RBI) and 1962 (.318, 22 HR, 74 RBI, 19 SB). He hit 101 homers in a 9-year career. He was 92 years old.

I know I told this story on the other site, but I worked for an indy league baseball team in Lynn, MA during the summer of 1997. Midway through the season, we signed Oil Can to a contract.

Rogelio Moret, a canโ€™t miss prospect out of Puerto Rico who made his debut at just 20. His issues off the field and MLBโ€™s inability to help him culminated in a notorious moment in 1978!

MIKE VACCARO: I was covering a Nets playoff series in Milwaukee. Gallo asked me to stay in Milwaukee and cover the Mets series that weekend. It was May and the Mets were already falling apart. I wrote a column on general manager Steve Phillips. Heโ€™d assembled a team of profoundly unlikable players, I would not write this now, but I wrote then that Mets fans arenโ€™t just mad, they want Steve Phillipsโ€™s head on a pike and they want to put that pike on the Triborough Bridge. Back then, Iโ€™m surprised they didnโ€™t put a cartoon of Phillipsโ€™s bloody head on a pike on the back page. That Saturday I reported to the ballpark in Milwaukee and Jay Horwitz, the PR director, said, โ€œWe might have a problem with Steve. Heโ€™s gonna want to see you when youโ€™re in the clubhouse.โ€ I said, โ€œThatโ€™s fine.โ€ In those situations, Iโ€™m not looking for a fight. If youโ€™re going to rip them, you got to let them rip you back. Steve brings me into this empty office. He purposely kept the door open. He wanted the players to hear him air me out. He aired me out, and I took it. Then he went a bit farther than he should have. He said, โ€œYou made my wife cry. Thatโ€™s the worst part.โ€ Now, the backstory is that Steve Phillips was a serial adulterer. That had already been in the paper. Heโ€™d been suspended by the Mets because he just couldnโ€™t stay faithful to his wife for, like, more than ten minutes at a time. I said, โ€œYou know what, Steve? Iโ€™m not the only one in this room that has done that, am I?โ€ As soon as I said it, here comes Steve Phillips, about ready to punch me in the jaw. Jay got in the middle and he dragged Steve out of there. I walked out, and Iโ€™m a little shaky, because you donโ€™t like it when somebody yells at you for five minutes straight, and Tom Glavine, Al Leiter, and a bunch of guys came over and said, โ€œThat was awesome.โ€ Phillips got fired about three weeks later.

I'm reading Paper of Wreckage, an oral history of the New York Post, and came across Mike Vaccaro reminiscing about the time in 2003 when he brutally zinged then Mets GM Steve Phillips.

Heโ€™s talking about tours. Literally bragging about how much the tours bring in year-round.

Yet the Dodgers are refusing to pay a living wage and engaging in union busting.

I think it's really brutal to try to rank Game 7s. Better to group them.

1925 is its own class

This one goes with 1924, 1960, 1991, 1997, 2001, 2016, and I suppose 1975.

They're all amazing (hopefully not missing one - list was off top of mind)
