Good piece. I'd add that, yes, investing in social care frees up resources in the NHS - but it works the other way also. Sorting out NHS lists for orthopaedics i.e. backs, hips, knees would allow those patients to undertake caring duties for their loved ones and so reduce the social care burden

Weren't the West German security services desperate to get their hands on the files at unification, so they could also snoop on the new FRG citizens?

Remarkable. Dare I say it, there's a whiff of the "Multiregional" origin theory about this, as opposed to "Out of Africa". The more we look the more complicated the picture becomes, which is thrilling!

Disabled space can be used by any disabled driver with a blue badge. Expect lots of conflict.

Main point though: why is charging at home so much, much cheaper than public charging?

It may be archaeology in the making but it's also needless waste dumped in the environment. The army should be taking better care and clearing up after themselves. They are guests in the area's ranges and should treat the place with more respect

But it is the case that the usual world maps we see do have USA at far left and Russia at far right. No particular geographical reason for that (or indeed having N pole at the top and Antarctica at the bottom). Maps do literally shape our world view. Maybe they should all center on Bering Strait!

Bigger issue is what happens when an incumbent member switches to another party? Given that we will vote for parties, not individuals, will those switching allegiance have to step down in favour of the next name on the incumbent party's list? And what if a member loses the party whip or is expelled?

Yes, he should have updated his address with the DVLA. But he should not have been sent a charge notice - the company's systems were faulty. Why should it be on him to appeal, reply, chase, & insist the charge was incorrect? Companies all too happy to waste our time and money when they are at fault

Presumably these Roman tiles may have be re-used multiple times in the interim from Romans leaving to Anglo-Saxon 7thC build? So may have formed all of Roman, British and Anglo-Saxon building fabric. Intriguing!

Literally sat in A+E yesterday, Ambulance paramedic handing over patient to doctor, he was reading his notes from his iPad-based paramedic system, she was transcribing said notes onto a paper form with a biro. The interface between Ambulance and hospital services is pen & ink

Yep, there may be back-end reasons for compatibility with legacy systems. Or just laziness. However - there is no excuse for a form asking for someone's full name, then assuming that you only use your first name. Lots of us use our middle names, not our first names!

Botanical interest excellent I'm sure, but visiting last year it seemed that much of the infrastructure put in originally now needs maintenance - broken or missing paving, water features dry, not working or removed, no water (or fish!) in the rainforest area of the glasshouse. Really needs updating

It's why Japanese companies had a dress code that all staff dress the same - when you get in the lift you've no idea if the person in there with you is the CEO or the office temp - so you treat them as if they were the CEO

Quite true, fair enough. I wonder, with more of these junctions having stripes, whether compliance at non-striped junctions will go down?! Drivers assuming if they have to give way where there are stripes, so where there are none, foot down! I suspect pedestrians won't take the risk in either case!

So - just paint on road, no Belisha beacons or zig-zags to prevent parking right up to the crossing. Not really zebra crossings. Yes, motorists should give way, but 20% risk of pedestrians being killed is supposed to be a good thing??

Fascinating look at a often-time bygone world, thank you

Anyone remember a game from the 1960s with the new road signs? Square shaped, thick, solid "cards", each white with a road sign on one side and a bright blue reverse with white pattern? I remember it from early 1970s

Yes, Jeremy Vine's show is usually more heat than light. But the new tramtrains don't have toilets. And they're not like trams, given they run on dedicated railways, between railway stations, and are replacing what were previously train services which had onboard toilets
