More that there’s a perception that if you can get work with the Big Three and get recognized, then you'll have “made it” and it’ll be a stepping stone to having your own successful work. But the reality often doesn't work out that way!

Somewhere I have a demo of this, but I’ll have to dig it up! (I think I posted it on my Tumblr once)

Basically it starts out very loose and messy and free-form with no panels, so I can start out with freestyle brainstorming, and subsequent passes get more structured from there.

I start with super rough stick-figure thumbs breaking out the script into separate actions/beats, and exploring variations for each. That helps me determine the actual panels I’ll need.

THEN I thumbnail empty panel shapes on the page based on that, with variants. Then I fill in the panel thumbs.

Probably advance trolling and astroturfing for 2026

I find that a significant number of those look suspiciously like bots, Russian trolls pretending to be “Left,” other sketchy trolls ditto, or random accounts from the UK or other non-US countries posting an oddly high amount of US political posts

What’s worse is, becoming known for working on a big popular IP doesn’t necessarily carry over into gaining fans for one’s own projects.

I remember a Marvel/DC artist talk about trying to sell her own comic at cons, but fans wouldn’t even look at it, they just wanted her to sign her Marvel/DC stuff

And that’s NOT EVEN getting into in-house work, where the company owns everything you do at your job (in the case of Disney, possibly everything you do outside of work, too, unless they’ve changed the horrible contracts they used to have)

I’ve worked with various IPs for various companies, and you either accept the “work for hire” clause, or you don’t get the job. Even if you negotiate for royalties, you still have to get the company to PAY, and they have a million tricks to avoid that.

I think in some cases they’ve even gone DOWN

I remember Mignola talking about being approached by one of the Big Three for cover art in recent years, and being offered LESS than what they paid him in the 80’s 🙃

I mean, Alan Moore has all those extensive rants on writers getting screwed over, so I’m guessing it’s wildly unequal among writers even if a select few of them get a decent deal

(Though writers do seem to get better deals way more often than artists, especially when it comes to interior artists)

I’ll take “lukewarm support” over “actively hostile” any day

Yeah, this has been a huge frustration for freelance artists since forever. The best protection we can currently get is maybe a “guild,” and those have little or no power to actually pressure companies that hire freelancers. Most of what guilds do is lobbying government on freelance-related issues.

And making constant videos can easily turn into a full-time job in itself, leaving no time to do any of the OTHER work

(This comes up a lot for artists, too: “just make short videos to be popular!” but then making short videos leaves no time to make the art that the videos are supposed to promote)
