Some exciting professional news:

Show Off! is returning in September! Matthew Gent and Tasha Sheridan will be co-hosting, with Robert Hazle at the piano. I will undoubtedly mention this again between now and then:)

Normal levels of theatre activity will resume next week - and there is certainly a daunting mountain of admin to be handled in the meantime - but it has been very strange going from the wonderful overstimulation of the Fringe to a very quiet and largely theatre-free late summer week in London.

There are other shows that I saw in previews here in London that were wonderful but that didn’t make my list of Fringe favourites.

I made it back to the Edinburgh Fringe this year as a punter, seeing 25 shows in 3 1/2 days last week. I absolutely loved it, despite the exhaustion that came with it.

The summer fun is largely over now. The coming weeks and months are likely to be action-packed, with plenty of cause for anxiety, but I’m also looking forward to lots of things.

I will likely be a bit more present here going forward.

The weather was mixed, but it was nevertheless great to fit in a swim at the West Reservoir today.

It was great to be dancing with friends at the Rivoli again tonight, for the first time in far too long.

It's Independent Bookshop Week. Ways you can support them:

-Don't browse a little bookshop, make a mental note of titles, then get them on Amazon. Buy the books then and there! Dare you!

-Get them to order books in, they almost always can.

-Just march in and present them with a huge bag of money.

So glad to have seen The Ballad of Wallis Island last night. It is a lovely film.

Saw Meow Meow tonight - for the first time in a while but very much not for the first time - at @sohotheatre.bsky.social. The show was utterly brilliant. I highly recommend it.

There were online nights after that, followed by some fantastic nights at The Square Pig in 2023 and 2024.

Show Off! has been on hiatus since the summer of 2024, but we are considering whether there is enough interest to try to bring it back.

Show Off! took place another 227 times at Koha, with its last outing there – although no one knew it at the time – taking the form of the 10th anniversary show on Friday 28 February 2020. It was another extraordinary night, attended by many new and old friends of Show Off!

Fifteen years ago right about now, on Saturday 6 March 2010, the first ever Show Off! night was in full swing. It was an exciting, exhilarating night at Koha with a great crowd.

Actually, it seems that it was 2001. The point still stands, though.

Not exactly stunt casting, given her credentials, but Reba McEntire in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway in 1999 was a revelation.

Also: how was that 20 years ago?!

I’m sad that Why Am I So Single? has ended so soon, but really glad that I got to be there today for the final performances. It is an extraordinary show, and it was an extraordinary production - and today was really special.

A couple of weeks into 2025 and the shows are becoming a bit more serious, which is not a bad thing. Tonight’s was @ivograham.bsky.social’s Carousel at the @parktheatrelondon.bsky.social. It was fantastic.
