Most of my story takes place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Ojibwe (Chippewa) are indigenous to this area. My WIP includes an elderly Ojibwe character, and the mansion she leaves behind is involved heavily in the plot.

That’s a good and thoughtful perspective.

I agree, emphasis on the occasional.

As a writer, I think of this question most when including a regional or culturally specific detail. There’s a balance between over explaining in the text and expecting the reader to look it up if unfamiliar.

But your example sounds ridiculously unnecessary 😂

Been thinking about this one. In convos w/other readers & writers, I suspect my opinion is controversial, but 🤷🏽‍♀️ :

Normalize using the occasional word or phrase in novels that require a dictionary or Google search. It’s an opportunity for readers to learn something new.

Micah grew up religious, yet she was taught to pursue education, especially by her father, so she has always lived with internal tension. She lived in majority spaces as a girl of color, so as an adult, she can adapt to various environments but exists as an outsider.

Editing. Not “editing” in and of itself, but that I’m a bit of a perfectionist. Even when working with editors, it’s hard for me to say “enough” and leave my work alone. This has always been a challenge for me, & part of what delayed my doctoral dissertation defense years ago. #writinglifemonthly

Drafting / research for sure. I love seeing my story come alive & my characters developing. Also, while I tend to write what I know, I also like to stretch myself, therefore research — either on subjects I know little about, or more depth into ones I do. It grounds my stories in a bit of reality.

My MC was well on her way to a career she loved, w/an SO who supported that. But she was pressured by church & family to fit into a certain (gendered) mold to conform to her religious faith, so she let it all go.

But even then, she was a ⬛️ peg in a ⚪️ hole.

I finished Sept at 50,000 words. My ultimate goal is to complete my first draft of 70-90k words by the end of November.

This weekend, I had a table at Cincinnati Fall Fest in Washington Park. It was a great time. The coolest part was meeting a mom and two kids, and sharing with her curious son (who made a beeline for my *adult* book because of the Jeep 😱) about why I write 💙📚

Faith deconstruction fiction critiques religion, and often includes characters in crises of faith, asking tough questions that lead them to reevaluate or even leave their religion. It’s fiction that encapsulates experiences of exvangelicals, ex-Mos, recovering Catholics & others.

Definitely. Meals can tell us a lot about a character’s background, culture, including how in touch — or not — they are with it, & the nature of relationships. In my current WIP, my FMC’s husband is asked to make dinner & he undercooks it as a show of weaponized incompetence.
